The writing has seemingly been on the wall for the last few weeks that star quarterback Cam Newton could be nearing an end to his time with the Carolina Panthers. Newton is dealing with another significant injury that has opened the door for the franchise to consider moving after this season. It has put the Chicago Bears front and center as a possible landing spot, but is it that the right move to make on both sides?
Cam Newton sidelined for the rest of the 2019 season
The hope entering the 2019 season was that Newton could put all of his injury woes behind him. He has missed the final stretch of games of last year due to a shoulder injury, which wound up requiring major surgery.
Newton had progressed enough to get back on the field in time for this season, but the injury bug once again arose as he suffered a foot injury in the third preseason game. He aggravated the injury in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which indefinitely sidelined him to now where he has been declared out for the rest of the season.
That has brought into question his long-term future with the franchise as this marks another campaign cut short by injury. It has thrown into play the possibility that he could be playing elsewhere after this season, with one team emerging as a potential landing spot.
Cam Newton could be open to playing with the Bears
Although Newton’s time with the Panthers appears its coming to an end, the Chicago Bears could be in the picture to make a move to snag him over next offseason.
The Bears have had some disappointing play from third-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky as he has continued to regress with his performance. Given Newton’s contract situation, it may open the door to a Chicago tenure, according to Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network. (h/t TotalProSports.com)
“He’s due about $19 million in salary next season, none of it is guaranteed. He’s a franchise quarterback who is intent on being healthy for March. That means he’s very trade-able to a place by the way like Chicago if they’re in the market for a quarterback something that from my understanding Cam Newton would in fact welcome if that all worked out.”
There is still much to be filtered through first before this possibility can be explored, but it’s clear that the Bears are ready to move off Trubisky. He hasn’t developed in the manner hoped, while Newton is a proven commodity that has shown he can lead a team to the playoffs.
Cam Newton to Bears would be a strong fit
The Panthers have been stuck in a rut the last couple of years as Newton has dealt with nagging injuries. It had hamstrung the franchise as there was no other quarterback that had shown they could carry the slack.
Kyle Allen hasn’t been a game-changing talent, but he has been quite a stable option under center that has continued to help guide the team to success. Meanwhile, the opportunity to play with the Bears looks to be the fresh new start that Newton needs to get his career back on track.
Newton should be completely healthy well before then as he’s considering undergoing foot surgery, which will clear up any lingering issues. The possibility to work out a new deal with the Bears after his remaining contract is sorted out with the Panthers could allow him to dictate his NFL future.
There is plenty that first needs to be worked out on both sides, but it’s something to keep an eye on in the coming months.
