Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Jake Luton isn’t hiding his enthusiasm about facing Packers star Aaron Rodgers.
At this point, both the Jaguars and Packers are who we expected them to be this season. Jacksonville is mired in a seven-game losing streak and in contention for the No. 1 overall pick.
The Green Bay Packers, however, are once again gunning for a playoff berth. Although Luton is hoping to pull off the upset, he is also excited about facing one of his childhood heroes.
Jake Luton just made his first NFL start
Out with Minshew Mania, and in with Loving Luton?
The Jacksonville Jaguars would be wise to come up with a slogan about Jake Luton starting at quarterback, much like the team did with Gardner Minshew last year.
A sixth-round pick from Oregon State, Luton made his first career start and NFL debut in Week 9 against the Houston Texans. Luton completed 26 of his 38 passes for 304 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the Jaguars’ 27-25 loss.
Luton’s first career completion went to receiver D.J. Chark, who took advantage of open holes and went 73 yards downfield for a touchdown.
Luton also had a 13-yard rushing touchdown on his lone carry.
With Minshew battling a thumb injury, Luton will make his second straight start in Week 10.
Luton is excited to face Aaron Rodgers
Jake Luton made his NFL debut against Deshaun Watson, the Texans’ star quarterback.
Things won’t be any easier for the Jaguars’ defense in Week 10. Aaron Rodgers, who is in the midst of an MVP-caliber campaign, and the Green Bay Packers host the Jaguars.
Luton is excited about the game, and not just because he is making his second straight start. According to the Florida Times-Union, Luton called the idea of playing Rodgers a “surreal” one.
“I was a big fan of him growing up. There are a lot of things he does that no one else can really do. He’s a wizard with a football. It’s really exciting to get out there and get to play ball against him.”
Luton turned 23 in April. Rodgers made his first career NFL start in September 2008, a few months after Luton turned 12.
Can Jake Luton pull off an uspet against Aaron Rodgers?
Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are considered heavy favorites to take down Jake Luton and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to OddShark, most books had the Packers as -13.5 favorites at publication. Luton may need to play the greatest game of his life at any level if he hopes to move to 1-1 at the NFL level.
Green Bay has won its last two matchups against the Jaguars. However, it is worth noting that Jacksonville won, 20-16, in December 2008, near the end of Rodgers’ first season as the starter.
Even if the Jaguars lose, however, Luton sounds like he simply appreciates the opportunity to take on one of his childhood heroes.
