Jerry Jones Just Sent Dak Prescott a Subtle Message

Dak Prescott’s contract situation with the Dallas Cowboys has become an exhausting matter. Although any new deal can’t be worked out until next offseason, it remains a prominent topic of discussion around the organization. Another layer may have been added after team owner Jerry Jones‘ recent comments about other star quarterbacks.

Dak Prescott’s contract situation

It has been repeatedly discussed over the last several months, but it’s hard to ignore Dak Prescott’s contract situation.

Prescott will play the entire 2020 season under the franchise tag with questions lingering around his long-term future. There have been positive remarks made from both sides that suggest a deal can get done next offseason. The 26-year-old has voiced that he wants to spend his entire career with the franchise.

Meanwhile, both Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have aired a strong desire to get Prescott under a long-term deal. It’s a discussion that will have to wait until next offseason, but it’s one that doesn’t mean it will be swept under the rug entirely until then. With that in mind, the elder Jones made some intriguing remarks that should draw Prescott’s interest.

Jerry Jones just voiced a subtle message to Dak Prescott

Jerry Jones has spoken about Dak Prescott’s contract situation at volume since last offseason.

However, the massive extensions that both Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson inked in the last few months have put a greater spotlight on Prescott’s future. Jones was recently asked about these two significant moves to which he voiced that he wasn’t surprised that Mahomes and Watson earned their respective deals. (H/T Dallas Morning News)

“There have been no surprises here,” Jones said on KRLD-FM. “No surprises in Mahomes and Watson. They just happen to be arguably two of the top players in the National Football League, prospective players and however you want to define them play the key positions. And so, I would say that you see no surprise here at all.”

At a glance, there may not be much to take away from Jones’ remarks. What it does show is that he believes that each player deserved their respective deals behind what they already accomplished on the field. It should provide Prescott with a clear message that he must play at an elite level to get the deal he wants.

The 26-year-old wants to be paid like a top talent, which means he must prove it in the 2020 season. It all sets up what should be an exciting campaign in Dallas for another reason.
