Joe Flacco and “elite” don’t belong in the same sentence. At least not when it comes to his play on the field. However, the longtime Baltimore Ravens starter is elite at one thing: making money. Despite his lackluster production, Flacco banked in Baltimore before departing for Denver. Though the newest member of the New York Jets likely won’t see the field, Flacco can rest easy knowing he’s made more money than he ever deserved.

Joe Flacco’s Ravens career

Despite playing his college ball at Delaware, the Ravens went all-in to secure Joe Flacco’s services in the 2008 NFL draft. Ozzie Newsome worked out a deal with the Houston Texans to move up to the 18th pick to get his guy. Flacco became the second quarterback off the board behind Matt Ryan, who went third overall to the Atlanta Falcons.

A day one starter, the 6-foot-6, 245-pound gunslinger posted unimpressive numbers as a rookie. Flacco threw just 14 touchdowns and couldn’t eclipse 3,000 yards despite starting all 16 games. However, the Ravens’ strong ground game and elite defense helped them earn a playoff berth.

In fact, even as a strikingly average quarterback, Flacco continued to win a ton of football games in Baltimore. The rocket-armed QB went 54-26 in his first five seasons with the Ravens. In 2012, Flacco put together one of the most unexpected and impressive postseason runs in NFL history. In leading the Ravens to their first Super Bowl title since 2000, he threw for 1,140 yards and 11 touchdowns. Incredibly, he didn’t throw a single interception. However, that stunning playoff performance proved to be an aberration.

Former Super Bowl MVP spent one year with the Broncos

Winning the Super Bowl MVP represented the peak for Joe Flacco. From 2013-2018, he went just 42-41. He topped 20 passing touchdowns only twice. Thanks to Flacco’s uninspiring play, the Ravens made just two playoff trips following their Super Bowl victory. Last offseason, Baltimore traded its longtime starter to Denver for a fourth-round pick.

The 34-year-old Flacco took over as the Broncos’ starter. Let’s just say the change of scenery did little to change opinions about his status as one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the NFL. In eight games, Flacco threw six touchdowns and five interceptions. Denver went 2-6 with the veteran QB. Unfortunately, Denver’s newly acquired starter suffered a season-ending neck injury. In March 2020, the Broncos cut Flacco.

What is Joe Flacco’s net worth?

Seeking a veteran mentor for Sam Darnold, the Jets inked Joe Flacco to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. That’s an incredibly cheap contract considering his previous paydays. That pay cut probably won’t be a big deal for a player who has taken home an insane amount of money since entering the league more than a decade ago. Thanks to some unbelievably bad contracts, Flacco has amassed a stunning net worth of $75 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Of course, that can all be traced back to his prolific 2012 playoff run. After earning nearly $30 million on his rookie deal, the Ravens handed their Super Bowl MVP a staggering six-year, $120.6 million contract that included $51 million guaranteed, according to Over the Cap. In 2016, Baltimore extended Flacco for $66.4 million over three years. That deal included $44 million guaranteed. The Ravens certainly didn’t get a great return on either of those investments.

Last season, the Broncos paid the perennially disappointing QB $18.5 million. In 12 years in the NFL, Joe Flacco has made $166.3 million despite never earning a single Pro Bowl selection.
