The Brooklyn Nets have a new head coach and that is Hall of Famer Steve Nash. The move was announced on Thursday, Sep. 3, 2020. Nash will rejoin basketball star Kevin Durant.

Durant and Nash spent a few years together with the Golden State Warriors and now the two are reunited again.

Nash spent 18 seasons in the NBA and he became one of the best point guards ever to play the game. When Nash first entered the league, he struggled for the first few years and didn’t quite make an impact on the court. He spent his first two seasons with the Phoenix Suns and then joined the Dallas Mavericks.

During the 2000-01 season, Nash had a breakout year. He averaged 15.6 points, 7.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds. After that season his career started to take off. He made his first All-Star team during the 2001-02 season and he also was named to the All-NBA third team. That season he averaged 17.9 points and 7.7 assists. After six seasons in Dallas, Nash returned to Phoenix. Nash helped the Suns become one of the top teams in the Western Conference during his time there. In 2005 and 2006, Nash was named the league’s MVP. During both of the seasons he averaged over 18 points and 10 assists.

Nash was a leader on the court and he knew how to put his team in a good position to win games. He also made his teammates around him better. He finished his career playing with the LA Lakers. After the 2013-14 season, he announced his retirement in 2015.

Steve Nash joining the Golden State Warriors

After his playing career, Nash continued to be involved in basketball. In 2015 he joined the Warriors as a player development consultant. Nash had the opportunity to work closely with the players and help develop their game. In 2018, Nash appeared on CBS Sports’ ‘Off the Bench’ podcast and talked about his relationship with the Warriors.

“First of all, Steve Kerr is just a great human being. Very intelligent person, great competitor, obviously has a great pedigree with not only his parents, who were educators, but playing for Phil and Pop, being a champion, playing with Michael and Timmy,” Nash said. “And funny enough I had developed a relationship with Kevin Durant before he came from the Warriors, so when he came it was more of a natural fit for us to work together.”

Nash was a part of two championship teams when he worked with the Warriors and Nash was the perfect guy to serve in the role as player development consultant.

Steve Nash becoming the new head coach in Brooklyn, joining Durant once again

Nash and Durant had already developed a relationship before Nash was named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. This is Nash’s first head coaching job and he’ll come in with a lot of talented players. The fact that he already had a relationship with Durant is a good sign because the two will work well together. Durant also might have had an input in bringing Nash over to Brooklyn because of their relationship.

When Durant was with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he and Nash worked out together a few times and that’s when the relationship started to develop. The two would keep in contact with each other over the years and then Nash got the position with the Warriors. With Nash as head coach in Brooklyn, it will be interesting to see how he handles his first team. If Durant and Kyrie Irving can stay healthy the Nets will certainly be a threat in the Eastern Conference and with that relationship between Nash and Durant, that should help with the development of the team.
