When you talk about the best wide receivers to play in the NFL, it’s hard not to mention Randy Moss. Moss had a lot of success during his career in the NFL. He spent 14 years in the league playing for five different teams.
When he was playing, he was doing things on the field that people have never witnessed before. Though he was talented in football, Moss had a big interest in basketball.
His career in the NFL
The minute that Randy Moss came into the league, the NFL knew who he was. The Minnesota Vikings selected Moss in the first round of the 1998 NFL draft. In his first NFL season, he would help the Vikings become the top-rated offense in the league. At the time, they set the single-season record for scoring with 556 points. Moss was named the Offensive NFL Rookie of the Year and was named a Pro Bowl starter. He also set the record for most touchdowns by a rookie with 17.
Moss started his first year off strong, and he would continue to have success throughout his career. He spent his first seven seasons in Minnesota and became one of the best receivers in the league during that time. Moss had six straight seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards. He was a playmaker, and his ability to go up and catch the ball separated him from other receivers in the league.
The wide receiver from West Virginia led the league in touchdowns three times when he was playing for the Vikings. He had four straight seasons of 10 or more touchdown receptions in Minnesota. Just looking at those stats when he first started off in the league, you could see how dominant he was.
After his time in Minnesota, he spent two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, four seasons with the New England Patriots, another season with the Vikings, one season with the Tennessee Titans, and he finished his career with the San Francisco 49ers.
Moss wanted to pursue a basketball career
People know of Randy Moss, the football player, but not too many know of Moss, the basketball player. In high school, he was one of the top basketball players in the state of West Virginia. He was the West Virginia Player of the Year in basketball in 1993 and 1994.
Moss had skills on the court as well and the field. While Moss was in high school, he played in a Nike All-American game. One of those players in that game was former NBA star, Kevin Garnett. While the game was put on hold, Moss approached Garnett and wanted to play a quick game of one-on-one.
In an interview on Garnett’s TNT show Area 21, Moss talked about that incident when he and Garnett met on the basketball court. “This is really what discouraged me. You and Schea Cotton helped me go to football. I stutter, then tried to go to the hole real quick. Laid that thing high off the glass where that white box is. You went up there and cleaned my ball,” Moss said in the interview with Garnett. “Shout out to you and Schea Cotton man because if y’all really wouldn’t had discouraged me to play basketball, then where would I be at today?”
Garnett was the reason Moss focused on football
After that moment with Garnett, Moss knew then that basketball was not the sport for him. He made the right decision too. Moss could have gone on to play basketball in college and have a successful career in the sport. But everything worked out for him in the long run.
It would have been interesting to see what Moss’s career what have looked like if he pursued basketball. But the NFL got to witness one of the best receivers ever.
