UFC fighter Colby Covington is one of the most polarizing fighters in the business. Much of which has come with Covington’s stances and comments over the years outside the octagon. He has gone that route again as he decided to go out of his way to bash to LA Lakers star forward LeBron James.
Colby Covington’s reputation
Throughout his rise to being one of the top UFC featherweight fighters, Colby Covington has garnered a firm reputation and image behind his support of Donald Trump.
It has seen him voice his unwavering support for the president while making many comments that further cemented that notion. His political stances have often seen him garner ire from fans and many other colleagues in the business. He has also built a strong fan base behind his fighting ability and viewpoints on matters away from the octagon.
All that has made the 32-year-old has become one of the most polarizing UFC fighters. With that in mind, Covington has decided to take a shot at LeBron James.
Colby Covington bashes LeBron James
Colby Covington hasn’t shied away from his genuine emotions concerning any subject throughout the last few years.
Much of which has seen him draw ire for his comments that have often been viewed as being insensitive. Covington has put himself in the limelight again after his remarks following the win over Tyron Woodley at UFC Fight Night on Saturday as he went out of his way to bash LeBron James publicly.
“I want to dedicate this fight to all the first responders and all the military out there. This world would not be safe without you guys. You keep us safe. Not these woke athletes. I’m sick of these woke athletes, these spineless cowards like LeBron James.”
There has been a strong response over social media toward Covington, as many voiced that his comments were race-fueled. At the same time, isn’t any clarity as to why he decided to go after James specifically.
James, along with many other professional athletes across the sports world, has been quite vocal over the last several months concerning social injustice. The LA Lakers star forward has been one of the leading voices for the NBA alongside his peers and various coaches around the league pushing for social change.
Covington has stuck firm to stance over the last few years, and it’s not something that should see him move away from his viewpoint regardless of the push back.
LeBron James will continue social justice efforts
There is going to continue to be intense backlash toward what Colby Covington stated.
Like Covington, LeBron James hasn’t been one to move away from voicing his feelings toward a subject matter. James will likely receive questions on Sunday concerning these strong remarks toward him that will elicit a firm response. These comments were made by the former interim UFC Welterweight champion to evoke some anger or disdain toward him.
It’s the mindset that he’s embraced throughout the last few years, which has drawn either strong support or hatred from either political sides. James’ comments on the situation will be closely dissected. However, it’s something that may further push him to be more vocal toward social injustice in the United States.
He has become a massive advocate for voting as he’s helped generate a strong push from the NBA. Many of the arenas across the league, including Staples Center, have become polling centers for the upcoming November election. James also helped create More Than a Vote, which is an initiative started by a group of athletes that is partnered with Live Nation to convert venues in voting sits.
Beyond that, there should be more coming forth on this front in the weeks ahead with that huge moment drawing closer.
