LeBron James’ Incessant Desire to Become the GOAT Forced Him to Humbly Apologize to His Biggest Supporter
LeBron James has earned recognition as one of the NBA’s greatest players. James’ pursuit of greatness has required plenty of personal sacrifices and an unwavering commitment to his craft. The journey led him to apologize to his wife Savannah.
LeBron James’ illustrious NBA career
Through his first 18 seasons, James has established himself as one of the game’s greatest players.
He has surpassed the lofty expectations placed upon him after entering the NBA straight out of high school. James has earned four NBA titles with four NBA Finals MVP awards, garnered four regular-season MVP awards, received 17 All-Star selections, and snagged an NBA-record 16 All-NBA team nominations (13 First Team, 3 Second Team).
He’s reached 10 NBA Finals, including eight straight that spanned over his stint with the Miami Heat and second run with the Cleveland Cavaliers. As he’s moved through his incredible basketball journey, he humbly apologized to his wife.

Through much of James’ basketball journey, his wife Savannah has been by his side.
She has played a significant part in shaping his life off the court through their relationship and family with three children. During an episode of the Road Trippin’ with RJ & Channing podcast in 2017 with former Cleveland Cavaliers’ teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, James voiced that he apologized to his wife for sometimes forgetting her importance as he’s pursued greatness in his craft.
“I am addicted to the process,” James said. “I’m addicted to the process. It’s so funny. I just told my wife the other day, I apologized to her. She was like ‘What are you apologizing for?’ I said ‘Because the journey that I’m on to want to be the greatest to ever play this game or to the point where no one ever forgets what I accomplished, I’ve at times lost the fact of how important you are to this whole thing.
” I want you to understand that along this journey while I’m playing this game there will be times that I lose the fact of how important you and my three kids are—my babies are.'”
James knows the tremendous importance that his wife plays in his life, raising their three children while keeping him grounded throughout his basketball career. It can often be extremely challenging because of the time away due to the constant travel, training, and other time-consuming matters involving his craft.
The life of a professional athlete is extremely demanding, especially of James’ recognition globally. Beyond that, his admission speaks to the gratitude and appreciation he holds toward his wife.
NBA future remains an open book
Since his apology to his wife, James continues to add to his illustrious career.
He’s in his fourth year with the Lakers, playing under a contract that runs through the 2022-23 campaign, marking his 20th season. Beyond that, there is no clarity concerning how much longer he plans to play. Lingering chatter remains that he wants to extend his career long enough to potentially play against his son Bronny.
At the same time, during an interview in July, he voiced that he feels he could play several more years with the Lakers. He continues to brush aside his long-term future, but it’s clear that he’s nowhere near heading into retirement.
