There has been an increased push for social change in the United States for much of the last several months. It has seen many outraged by the continued mistreatment that the Black community receives from law enforcement. All the frustration boiled up on Wednesday after the latest development from the Breonna Taylor case that included LA Lakers star LeBron James sending a strong message concerning the situation.
NBA players outspoken about social injustice
Over the last several months, the sports world has become heavily involved in pushing for social change.
The NBA has been at the forefront, guiding the sports leagues forward in the efforts. It has seen many players use their platforms to voice the need for massive societal change. That alone nearly saw the 2020 NBA playoffs canceled after the tragic Jacob Blake shooting in Wisconsin.
The other professional sports leagues such as the NFL, MLB, NHL, and MLS have followed suit behind the NBA in unity. Among that, there is an overwhelming push from players wanting the arrest of the police officers who shot 26-year-old Breonna Taylor.
There was a significant update in the situation, which has left LeBron James and many other angered and devastated.
LeBron James among the many players outraged by the Breonna Taylor case
One of the loudest outcries through the entire increased push for social change regards arresting the officers who shot Breonna Taylor back in March.
A significant update in the situation occurred on Wednesday with a grand jury in Louisville, indicting only one of the three officers involved in Taylor’s death on first-degree wanton endangerment charges. That news sparked some massive outrage and disappointment across the country, including LeBron James expressing his raw emotions.
I’ve been lost for words today! I’m devastated, hurt, sad, mad! We want Justice for Breonna yet justice was met for her neighbors apartment walls and not her beautiful life. Was I surprised at the verdict. Absolutely not but damnit I was & still am hurt and heavy hearted! I send my love to Breonna mother, family and friends! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!!
There is significant outrage with the situation as many believe that the charges against former detective Brett Hankinson were nowhere severe enough. It has drawn immediate criticism as the counts he’s facing are regarding him allegedly firing blindly through a door and window with bullets that hit through an apartment adjacent to Taylor’s.
All that has guided the conversation toward many beyond James asking for much-needed change behind increased efforts.
LeBron James and other players promise more action
It’s been much more than LeBron James angered and hurt by the situation. Many other athletes have voiced their disappointment through social media or press conference interviews. It’s a matter that has led to several protests emerging around the country from people outraged by the Breonna Taylor case result.
These are issues that the protests over the last several months have continued to pinpoint. It comes down to the unfair and unequal treatment that the Black community receives from law enforcement. Breonna Taylor’s case further underlines that point as the officers involved avoided getting any significant charges for their actions.
That has led to many athletes airing out their frustrations and more substantial demands for social change. LeBron James also voiced that he will do what he can to help create the necessary change to cease these tragic situations. There will be much more on this front in the coming months as a stronger overall push from athletes and the respective communities around the United States.
