Lionel Messi has been Barcelona’s driving force for much of his professional career and has led the club to plenty of success. However, things have reached a point where the team has plateaued with their current group of talent.

Barcelona depends significantly on Messi’s performance to guide them forward while management hasn’t been keen on revamping the roster to help them stay on top. With that in mind, the six-time Ballon d’Or award-winner has reportedly sent a fax to Barcelona to indicate that he wants to leave the team on a free transfer, according to Mail Online.

Lionel Messi has communicated to Barcelona via fax that he wants to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

There is a belief that the club will contest his argument that the deadline changed because the season had to restart due to the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, the feeling around Messi is that he believes the clause in his contract is valid because the season ended in August and not May.

There is potential conflict that will lie ahead coupled with it being hard to shade away from the discontent he has with Barcelona.

There is a mixed bag of reactions to the hiring, as some believe it was the right move. Meanwhile, others see things staying the same course for the club.

If Messi gets his request, it’s believed that Manchester City would be the frontrunners to land him. The club has former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who coached the team during much of their peak years of success.
