Luka Doncic’s breakout 2019-20 campaign

Throughout the first several weeks of the season, Doncic has taken his game to the next level that has earned him much recognition as being one of the top players in the league.

The 20-year-old has been the driving force for the Mavericks’ strong start that has them well into the playoff picture in the stacked Western Conference. Doncic has become an all-around elite factor, averaging triple-double type numbers with 30.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 9.2 assists while shooting 47.6 percent from the floor.

That has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s greatest players, such as LeBron James, due to his significant impact on the court. Doncic’s meteoric rise has also seen him put himself in record-breaking statistical company with Jordan in several regards as he recently broke an all-time mark set by the Hall of Famer.

In response to all the chatter around his play in relation to Jordan, Doncic had some intriguing comments.

Luka Doncic on Michael Jordan

As the regular season has rolled along, Doncic has continued to rack up numerous historical statistical marks that have underlined his promising talent.

The second-year forward put up another impressive outing surpassed Jordan with his 19th straight game with at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists. With that in mind, Doncic was quick to shut down the comparisons to Sir Airness following Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings.

Although Doncic has put together an incredible historic streak, it’s hard to truly compare anyone to Jordan, who is widely regarded as the greatest player of all-time. He was a one-of-a-kind player that had a tremendous impact on the game beyond just his scoring ability that changed the game forever.

Doncic has the potential to carve out his own lane in NBA history, but it doesn’t do him or any other player justice to compare them to Jordan in any significant capacity. The fact that the Mavericks rising star recognizes that is quite telling of his mentality and recognition for greatness.

Luka Doncic’s bright future

It may be quite soon to put those types of lofty comparisons for Doncic in his second season, but it’s clear that has a game-changing talent that many greats had that early in their respective careers.

He has quickly become the face of the franchise for the Mavericks while thrusting himself in the MVP conversation before the age of 21. Doncic is playing at another level that is unmatched at his age that only puts tremendous promise about what lies ahead of him.

There are not many holes in his game despite it being just his second year in the league as he has become one of the league’s best passers and scorers. His play will continue to put Dallas on the map as a potential powerhouse in the Western Conference over the next decade-plus.

The Mavericks were hoping that Doncic could become their next cornerstone player after future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki, and have potentially got much more than just that. Only time will tell what type of career he will put together, but he’s certainly off to an incredible start.
