Players from the NBA were in full support of the WNBA kicking off their season. Many NBA players took to social and displayed their WNBA orange hoodie that quickly took the media by storm.
Usually, the NBA and WNBA season don’t overlap, but due to the coronavirus, the NBA restart and the start of the WNBA are around the same time.
NBA players expressing their support for the WNBA
People don’t pay much attention to the WNBA season like they do the NBA season. But NBA players are big fans of the WNBA. One fan of the WNBA is NBA star, LeBron James. In 2019, the NBA released a video showing James listing who his favorite WNBA players were. Some players that he named were Elena Delle Donne, Candace Parker, and Diana Taurasi. “Their skill set, their ability to shoot, pass, dribble, command double teams, play above the level of the game, and inspire their teammates is something cool,” James said.
Kobe Bryant was also a huge fan of the WNBA. He may have been the biggest fan out of all the NBA players. Bryant would always enjoy going to the games with his daughter Gianna. Not only was Bryant a fan, but he was a big supporter of the WNBA as well. According to Yahoo Finance, when Cathy Engelbert was hired as the new WNBA commissioner, she said that Bryant was the only current or former NBA player to reach out to her. Being a father of multiple daughters, Bryant enjoyed teaching girls the game of basketball. Whenever he attended a game, he always had a smile on his face and was excited to watch some women’s basketball.
Many other players support the WNBA. The WNBA does not get the respect that it deserves at times, and some people don’t take it as seriously as they do the NBA. These women are very talented, and it’s good to know that they have support from NBA players and other people.
NBA players sporting their orange WNBA hoodies in support of the WNBA season
Leading up to the start of the WNBA season, NBA players wanted to show their support in a big way. They decided to wear the WNBA hoodie with the logo to show the players they have their full support. Players like James, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, and many others were wearing a hoodie to show support.
Those photos were receiving a lot of interaction on social media, and people wanted to buy a hoodie after seeing the NBA players wearing it. NBA players believe that the WNBA should receive just as much support as they get.
More and more people are starting to follow the WNBA
On July 25, the WNBA kicked their season off. The game between the L.A. Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury was the most-watched WNBA opener since 2012. The game averaged 540,000 viewers on ABC, according to an article from the L.A. Times. Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike talked about how the WNBA needs to continue to have that exposure.
“We’ve been saying that ‘The W’ is here,” Ogwumike said, “and hopefully now people are certainly realizing it.” Hopefully, going forward, the WNBA can continue to get support from many other people and not just the NBA players. The future is bright for women’s basketball.
