Marcedes Lewis Has Earned Nearly $53 Million and Is Quietly Still Going Strong in Green Bay
Football fans watching the Green Bay Packers in Week 9 weren’t mistaken — Marcedes Lewis is still playing in the NFL.
Yes, that is correct. Lewis — the former Jaguars standout tight end — is still going strong at age 36.
Although Lewis doesn’t put up eye-popping numbers for the Green Bay Packers, he continues to play and has an excellent chance at winning his first career Super Bowl ring.
Marcedes Lewis had a terrific career in Jacksonville
First off, Marcedes Lewis’ name is not Mercedes Lewis. That remains a common mistake even in Lewis’ 15th NFL season.
Lewis spent his first 12 NFL years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, catching touchdowns for a team that usually finished with a losing record. Lewis totaled 397 catches for 4,729 yards and 36 touchdowns across 170 games for the Jaguars.
He added 10 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in five career playoff games with the Jaguars.
Lewis currently ranks third in Jaguars history in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.
Lewis has spent the last three years in Green Bay
Despite making the 2017 AFC championship game and finishing a few minutes short of making the Super Bowl, Jacksonville made some changes in the 2018 offseason.
One significant move was parting ways with Marcedes Lewis after 12 seasons. Lewis signed with the Green Bay Packers, a move which provided quarterback Aaron Rodgers with another weapon at tight end and allowed Lewis to join one of the NFL’s top teams.
Going from Jacksonville to Green Bay, weather-wise, is a major change. But from a pure football standpoint, it was like going from the outhouse to the penthouse.
Lewis has seen far fewer targets with the Packers. Despite playing in all 16 games two years ago, Lewis caught three passes for 39 yards to open his Packers career.
Lewis had 15 catches for 156 yards and a touchdown last year. The veteran tight end added two playoff catches for 14 yards.
Marcedes Lewis is still going strong at age 36
Marcedes Lewis is still going strong in his 15th NFL season, even if many don’t know that he’s still playing.
Lewis played in seven of the Packers’ first eight games this season. He has had one reception in four of those games, including an 18-yard touchdown catch in a 37-30 victory over Drew Brees and the Saints in Week 3.
Lewis had a 1-yard touchdown in the Packers’ 34-17 win over San Francisco to open Week 9.
According to Spotrac, Marcedes Lewis has earned $52.7 million through his 15 seasons. Lewis has not yet said if he will return for the 2021 season or not.
If Lewis decides to return next year, look for him to make that announcement shortly after the Packers’ current season ends. Lewis announced his intent to return this year in January 2020, a day after the Packers lost in the NFC championship game.
