The San Francisco 49ers have been dealing with a quarterback conundrum so far in the 2021 NFL season. It continues into Week 7, as Jimmy Garoppolo returns to the field. However, life may be difficult for the Niners’ signal-caller, as the team received bad news about one of its key offensive players.
Trent Williams’ injury could spell trouble for Jimmy G against the Indianapolis Colts.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo returns from injury as Trey Lance goes out
Jimmy Garoppolo missed the 49ers’ Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals due to a calf injury. He used the team’s bye week to recover from the injury. Garoppolo did not appear on San Francisco’s injury report ahead of its Sunday Night Football matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
The rookie had an opportunity to make his case to be the starting quarterback for the 49ers. However, he was unable to get into a rhythm against Arizona. His injury only further complicates things as Garoppolo gets to play his way back into the starting role moving forward.
Kyle Shanahan named Garoppolo the starter to open the regular season. While the eighth-year signal-caller hasn’t played poorly, he hasn’t been special either.
With all of the Niners’ injuries, they may need Jimmy Garoppolo to do more than just manage the game.
Trent Williams is doubtful for Sunday Night Football
The San Francisco 49ers will likely be without a large piece of their offense against the Indianapolis Colts.
Starting left tackle Trent Williams emerged on the 49ers’ injury report this week with an ankle sprain. According to the 49ers team website, Williams is doubtful for their Week 7 matchup against Indianapolis.
Williams’ absence will likely have a tremendous impact on San Francisco’s offense in this one. The team is already without key impact players on offense, including Raheem Mostert and George Kittle.
The pressure continues to mount on Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulders. Williams protects the quarterback’s blindside, and rookie fifth-rounder Jaylon Moore would most likely get the start in his absence.
The Colts have an opportunistic defense and will be trying to get after Garoppolo all night long.
The Colts will need to take advantage of Williams’ absence
Trent Williams is in his 11th season in the NFL and his second with the 49ers. San Francisco added him before the 2020 season, and his veteran presence provided a massive boost to Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
If the rookie makes the start in Williams’ absence, expect the Indianapolis defense to send plenty of pressure his way. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will likely utilize intricate blitzing schemes to test the young tackle’s chops as a pass blocker.
The Colts have some talented edge rushers, including Kemoko Turay, Al-Quadin Muhammad, and Tyquan Lewis. DeForest Buckner is one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL, and the Colts love to send linebacker Darius Leonard on blitzes.
Jimmy Garoppolo will have to be aware of his surroundings because Indianapolis will try to create havoc in the Niners backfield. If the Colts’ defense can take advantage of the favorable matchup on the edge, it could be a long day for Jimmy G.
If Moore isn’t ready for the moment, the Colts could ruin Garoppolo’s return and his hold on the starting job.
