He is currently at the top of the list of all-time money leaders in the sport. During the 2000s, Singh had a lot of success and made a name for himself.
Vijay Singh’s professional career
Singh’s professional career started in 1982. In 1984 he won the Malaysian PGA Tour. Five years later, he won his first European Tour title at the Volvo Open Championship in Italy. After struggling early on in his career, Singh took his game to the next level.
In 1993 he entered the PGA Tour and won his first event, the Buick Classic. After winning that tournament, Singh was named the 1993 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Singh continued to have success over the years. He would go on to with the Buick Classic for the second time in 1995. In 1998, Singh won his first Major title when he won the PGA Championship at Sahalee County Club. Over four days, he shot a 70-66-67-68. Two years later, he would go on to win the Masters beating Ernie Els by three strokes.
Winning the Masters is a big accomplishment for professional golfers. For Singh, it was another big win for him, and that would help him in his rankings as becoming one of the best golfers in the country. He would continue to grow in the rankings and peak his way to the top.
Vijay Singh becomes top golfer in the world
The success did not stop for Singh. In 2003, he won four tournaments and had 18 top-10 finishes and led the PGA Tour in money. He also had the second-highest single-season total in PGA Tour history with $7,573,907. Golf is an individual sport, and if you can compete at a high-level, you will be rewarded. That is something that Singh did and did it well.
Singh started the 2004 season strong, continuing to win multiple events. There was a point where he had 12 consecutive top 10 finishes, which was two shy of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record. Singh won the PGA Championship in 2004, which was his third major. At the end of the 2004 season, he finished nine victories, 18 top-10 finishes, and a record of $10,905,166 in earnings. He would go on to be named the PGA Tour’s and PGA of America’s Player of the Year. Singh was the No. 1 golfer in the world.
Singh accomplished a lot throughout his career, and he was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Later on, in his career, Singh faced some back injuries that caused him to withdraw from a few events. In 2009 he had to get arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. After that surgery, he had a bad 2009 career. After that surgery, it seemed that Singh never got back to his normal self, where he was dominant in the sport.
Vijay Singh made a lot of money playing golf
Throughout the course of his career, Singh has made a nice amount of money solely of his performance alone. He currently sits fourth on the all-time money leaders list with $71,216,128. That goes to show you that if you play your best at the top events, you will get paid.
Singh did that many times during his career, and that’s why he’s up there on that list with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Before Singh had a drop in his performance, he was the best in professional golf at one point during his career.
