Before the 2020-21 season, Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic was projected by many to win the MVP award. While the former Rookie of the Year has been putting up incredible individual numbers, the Mavericks are struggling to win games in the early part of the season.
ESPN writer Zach Lowe is one of the pundits who picked Doncic to win MVP in 2020-21. While the veteran analyst is still high on the Mavericks star, Lowe recently took a shot at Doncic for some of his antics on the court, and Dallas owner Mark Cuban didn’t appreciate it.
Zach Lowe says Luka Doncic is whining too much
Zach Lowe recently told Tim MacMahon on “The Lowe Post” podcast that Luka Doncic is whining too much this season. The popular NBA writer said the Mavericks star has to improve his body language moving forward.
“Luka has become one of the biggest whiners in the NBA,” Lowe said, via AhnFireDigital.com. “It’s constant. Every time he drives, he is whining. He spent so much energy whining to the referees and slumping his shoulders to teammates. It sucked the life of the team many times.”
After getting blown out by the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, the Mavericks dropped to 9-14 on the season. Doncic is averaging 27.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.4 assists, but Dallas is in 14th place in the Western Conference standings and on pace to miss the playoffs.
Mark Cuban is universally recognized as the best owner in the NBA. Not only has he turned the Mavericks into a first-class organization, but Cuban always goes to bat for his players, which is why Dirk Nowitzki spent his entire Hall of Fame career in Dallas.
Zach Lowe’s comments about Luka Doncic went viral. During an appearance with Cari Champion and Jemele Hill on Vice Sports, Mark Cuban fired back at the ESPN writer for his statement.
Mark Cuban fires a NSFW shot at Zach Lowe for calling Luka Doncic a whiner
Jemele Hill asked Mark Cuban what he thought about Zach Lowe’s comments on Luka Doncic. As expected, the Mavericks’ owner went off on Lowe.
“I’ll tell you exactly what I think. F**k you, Zach Lowe. You don’t know sh*t,” Cuban said. “I know Luka, right, and it’s just he’s not a big whiner. He’s passionate. He cares, he wants to win. He’s got some sh*t to him. But no, he’s not a whiner. He’s a baller.”
This is exactly why Mavericks fans love Cuban. He’s never going to let someone who doesn’t play in the NBA take a shot at his best player. Lowe may be a good writer, but his critique of Doncic was weak, considering every player in the league complains to the refs when they don’t get a call.
It’s going to be interesting to see if the NBA fines Mark Cuban for his expletive-laced comments defending Luka Doncic. Dallas fans, though, appreciate their owner sticking up for Doncic against Zach Lowe.
The Mavericks may need to make a trade
The Mavericks are struggling on offense and defense to begin the 2020-21 season. They are 23rd in the NBA in scoring and 21st in defense.
In the rugged Western Conference, the Mavericks can’t afford to fall too far back in the playoff race. Mark Cuban and general manager Donnie Nelson may need to make a trade soon to get Luka Doncic more help.
