Two of the most dominant pitchers in baseball are Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole. They are two of the richest too. Scherzer and Cole met in the World Series in 2019, and Scherzer’s team got the win as the Washington Nationals were World Series champions. With both of these pitchers having a lot of success, and both of them being on some expensive contracts with their respective teams — Scherzer with the Nationals and Cole now with the New York Yankees — which one has a higher net worth?
Max Scherzer has been dominant on the mound for the Tigers and Nationals
Scherzer made his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008. He ultimately pitched in 16 games that season (starting in seven) but went 0-4 with a 3.05 ERA. In 2009, Scherzer became a regular starter for the Diamondbacks. He ultimately went 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA.
In 2010, though, he began pitching for the Detroit Tigers. After going 12-11 with a 3.50 ERA in his first season in Detroit, Scherzer had a 15-9 record in 2011. His ERA went up slightly, though, as it was 4.43.
During the 2012 season, Scherzer continued to pitch well, going 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA. The Tigers were also excellent as a team too. They went 88-74 and reached the World Series. Scherzer did not allow a run in his one start in the ALDS. He then went 1-0 with one earned run and 10 strikeouts in his ALCS start. In the World Series, Scherzer pitched 6.1 innings but allowed three earned runs. The Tigers ultimately lost to the San Francisco Giants in four games.
Scherzer then earned his first All-Star selection in 2013, his first of seven straight. That is not all he did in 2013, though, as he won the AL Cy Young Award, going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA. Scherzer played for the Tigers in one more season in 2014 and led the AL in wins for the second straight season with 18.
Since 2015, Scherzer has been absolutely dominant for the Nationals. He has not had an ERA over 3.00 in one season, and he has led the NL in wins twice. Scherzer also won two consecutive NL Cy Young Awards in 2016 and 2017, and he led the NL in strikeout in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Scherzer went 11-7 in 2019 with a 2.92 ERA.
Gerrit Cole has been excellent the last two seasons
Cole made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013. He went 10-7 that season in 19 starts and had a 3.22 ERA. After he had an 11-5 record in 2014 and a 3.65 ERA, Cole earned his first All-Star selection in 2015. He ultimately went 19-8 for the Pirates and had a 2.60 ERA.
Cole only pitched in 21 games in 2016 and had a 7-10 record with a 3.88 ERA. He then only went 12-12 with the Pirates in 2017 with a 4.26 ERA.
However, in 2018 and 2019 with the Houston Astros, he has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. Cole earned his second All-Star selection in 2018 as he had a 15-5 record with a 2.88 ERA.
Then in 2019, he had the best season of his career. Cole went 20-5 with an AL-leading 2.50 ERA. He also led the AL with 326 strikeouts and finished second in the AL Cy Young Award race.
Cole signed a massive contract with the Yankees prior to the 2020 season.
Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole met in the 2019 World Series
Scherzer’s Nationals and Cole’s Astros met in the World Series in 2019.
They both got the starting nod in Game 1 of the series too. Scherzer ended up getting the win, pitching five innings, allowing two earned runs, and striking out seven. Cole pitched seven innings and allowed five earned runs. The Nationals won 5-4.
Cole started in Game 5, though, and was dominant. He pitched seven innings, only allowed one earned run, and he struck out nine batters. The Astros won 7-1 too. However, Scherzer started in Game 7. He ultimately pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs. The Nationals ultimately won 6-2 to win the World Series.
Which star pitcher has a higher net worth?
Both of these pitchers have made a lot of money in their careers. They are both signed to some massive contracts with their teams too.
Believe it or not, neither one can say that they are worth more than the other. Cole has an estimated $50 million net worth, while Scherzer is also worth an estimated $50 million.
Scherzer and Cole have both been dominant on the mound over the years, and they have both become very wealthy.
