Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan has been quiet during the 2020-21 season. Despite his team being in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings and rookie LaMelo Ball turning heads left and right, Jordan has stayed out of the limelight for the most part.
However, since he’s Michael Jordan and LaMelo Ball is playing very well for a 19-year-old, everyone in the NBA world wants to know what the Chicago Bulls legend thinks about his new franchise player.
LaMelo Ball could win Rookie of the Year
Michael Jordan and the Hornets drafted LaMelo Ball with the third overall pick in the 2020 draft. The younger brother of New Orleans Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball could win the 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Award.
In 35 games for the Hornets during the first half of the 2020-21 season, Ball averaged 15.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists while shooting 44.9% from the field, 37.8% from beyond the arc, and 80.2% from the free-throw line. He recorded seven double-doubles and became the youngest player in NBA history to rack up a triple-double.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors may regret not drafting Ball. Even though Anthony Edwards has been solid for the Wolves and James Wiseman looks good in Golden State, Ball has superstar potential due to his scoring, passing, and rebounding skills.
Michael Jordan won six titles with the Bulls during the ’90s, but he hasn’t had success since becoming the Hornets’ owner. That may change now that LaMelo Ball has the keys to the franchise.
Michael Jordan: LaMelo Ball has ‘exceeded our expectations’
LaMelo Ball leads all rookies in points, assists, rebounds, and steals per game. Michael Jordan and the Hornets have been very impressed with how easy the Anaheim, California native makes the game of basketball look.
“I think Melo has adjusted to the NBA game better than any of us ever thought this early in his career,” Jordan told The Associated Press in an email. “He has exceeded our expectations so far this season.”
Hearing this quote from Jordan had to make Ball feel really good. After all, MJ is the greatest basketball player of all time. When he compliments someone, you know His Airness means it.
The Hornets have missed the playoffs four straight seasons. Michael Jordan is one of the most competitive humans on the face of the earth, so everyone knows he’s itching to see the Charlotte franchise get back to the postseason.
With LaMelo Ball leading the way, the Hornets could shock the NBA world and make the playoffs in the East as a lower seed.
What is it like to play for Michael Jordan?
Hornets star Terry Rozier was recently on Jalen & Jacoby and talked about what it’s like playing for Michael Jordan. The scoring guard said the six-time Finals MVP has been a great mentor for him and everyone in Charlotte.
“I just remember my first time sitting down with him in Vegas at lunch. He’s just telling me how he believe in me. When you’re hearing that from MJ, that’s just different, that’s different than anybody else,” Rozier said. “He gave me that confidence right away. He’s great for us. He’s a great mentor.”
LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, and the rest of the players on the Hornets are fortunate to have Michael Jordan as their boss. They can go to the GOAT whenever they have a question about the game, and Jordan will give them the best advice.
