Chris Paul and the Phoenix Suns lost the 2021 NBA Finals to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. The Suns blew a 2-0 series lead, and one of Michael Jordan‘s former teammates on the Chicago Bulls had fun on social media at Paul’s expense.
Not only has Paul lost four best-of-seven series in which his team led 2-0, but he’s also lost 13 straight playoff games refereed by Scott Foster. Stacey King, who won three titles with Jordan in the ’90s, couldn’t help but react to Paul’s demise on Twitter.
Stacey King tweets funny memes about Chris Paul
Paul and Foster have a well-documented history. The veteran referee and future Hall of Fame point guard have never gotten along on the basketball court, and that trend will likely continue after the Suns lost Game 6 to the Bucks. After all, Paul has lost the last 13 playoff games he’s played in that Foster has officiated.
King posted a few funny tweets on social media after the stats about Paul and Foster came out. Jordan’s former teammate was clearly having some fun at Paul’s expense since all of NBA Twitter was roasting the All-Star point guard after blowing yet another playoff series.
Even though Jordan is the majority governor of the Charlotte Hornets, he was presumably upset to see Paul lose in the Finals since the two are close friends.
Chris Paul is part of Michael Jordan’s brand
Paul has a contract with Jordan’s Nike footwear and apparel division. The 11-time All-Star is one of eight players in NBA history to have at least 10 consecutive signature shoes with a brand.
Jordan and Paul met for the first time when the latter played in the Jordan Brand Classic in 2003. Ever since then, the two NBA legends have had a personal relationship.
“We were getting ready to take the team picture,” Paul said in 2001, via ESPN. “I was sitting in one seat and Shannon Brown was sitting in another seat and the middle seat was open. We obviously knew MJ was going to walk in and sit there. When he walked in, man, he just took over the room. And he actually walked up and knew my name. So that’s something I’ll never forget. To have a personal relationship with him now and for him to be a mentor of mine, it’s something when you’re growing up as a kid in North Carolina you would never expect.”
Jordan has never experienced the setbacks that Paul has endured during his career. The Bulls legend went 6-0 in the Finals and three-peated twice. It must be tough for Jordan to watch his friend struggle so mightily to win a championship, but then again, he did prevent several Hall of Famers from winning titles.
Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and John Stockton retired without rings because of Michael Jordan
The Bulls defeated Barkley and Suns in the ’93 Finals. Jordan also beat Malone, Stockton, and the Utah Jazz in the ’97 and ’98 Finals. If Paul doesn’t win a title before he retires, he will join Barkley, Malone, and Stockton as NBA icons who never reached the promised land.
It will be fascinating to see what Paul does this offseason. He has a player option worth $44.2 million for the 2021-22 season. He would become an unrestricted free agent if he declines it, and several teams would likely pursue him despite his shortcomings in the playoffs.
