Miguel Cabera is one of the best MLB players to ever step into the batter’s box. His excellent play for the Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers has helped him become an extremely wealthy man, too. However, his questionable decisions have ultimately cost him millions. In fact, a secret family he had with an ex-lover who wasn’t his wife will end up costing him over $5 million.
Miguel Cabrera has had a legendary career with the Marlins and Tigers
Miguel Cabrera made his MLB debut with the Florida Marlins in June 2003. He quickly became a star as he helped them win the World Series that year. Cabrera then earned the first of four straight All-Star selections in the next season as he hit at least 33 home runs in three of four seasons from 2004 through 2007. He also recorded 112 or more RBIs in each of those years.
In 2008, though, Cabrera became a member of the Detroit Tigers and has since become one of the greatest MLB players ever. The star from Maracay, Venezuela, earned seven straight All-Star selections with the Tigers from 2010 to 2016. He also earned consecutive American League MVP awards in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, that 2012 season was one fans will never forget. Cabrera ultimately won the AL Triple Crown with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs, and 139 RBIs, and the Tigers went all the way to the World Series.
Overall, through seven games of the 2021 season (his 19th MLB campaign), Cabrera has hit 488 home runs to go with 1,732 RBIs and a .313 batting average.
While everything has been great on the field over the years, he has also put himself in some challenging situations off it.
The MLB legend had a secret family with an ex-lover
Despite being married and fathering multiple children with his wife, Miguel Cabrera essentially had a secret family.
In 2019, the Detroit Free Press reported that Cabrera previously bought his ex-lover, Belkis Rodriguez, a flower shop and ultimately had two children with her. He made sure to take care of her and their kids for years, too, as court documents said he bought them a mansion to live in, a Range Rover, expensive birthday parties, and trips to Europe. Cabrera also paid for them to travel across the country to see him play.
However, his wife later found out about the affair and filed for a divorce in 2016. She ultimately changed her mind, but her discovery led to Cabrera leaving his secret family, Rodriguez claimed. Rodriguez then sued the Tigers star for child support, which in turn outed his affair.
It also cost him millions.
The Tigers star cost himself millions
According to the Detroit Free Press, Cabrera had been paying $12,000 per month in child support before Rodriguez sued him. A judge then later ordered him to pay $20,000 per month in child support but later cut it to a slightly lower monthly cost.
“Cabrera will now pay $14,000 a month in child support to the woman he secretly fathered two children with, instead of the $20,000 a month,” the Detroit Free Press reported in 2019.
That’s not all, though. The judge also ordered Cabrera to pay the $6,776 mortgage payment for the house he helped Rodriguez purchase. That was in addition to paying for his kids’ health costs, schooling, and tutoring. Cabrera must also cover travel expenses, property taxes, attorney fees, and a $5 million life insurance policy for both kids.
The two children must also receive the same standard of living as his other kids. That means he will pay for “vacations and birthday parties equal to what his children get,” as well as “a nanny, tutoring, annual passes to Disney World and Sea World, a big house with a swimming pool,” and a Range Rover, per the Free Press.
The two children he had with Rodriguez were 4 and 6 years old in 2019.
When factoring in all those expenses and the child support he must pay until the kids turn 18, Cabrera’s secret family could cost him over $5 million, the Detroit Free Press estimated.
Luckily for him, he has made plenty of money in his baseball career.
Miguel Cabrera’s MLB career has given him a substantial net worth
While that $5 million-plus price tag may seem significant, Miguel Cabrera has made more than enough money to cover it.
According to Spotrac, Cabrera has made $321.02 million in his career. Other than the 2020 season, which saw many players take pay cuts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has made more than $20 million annually every year since 2010. That has all helped him rack up an estimated $125 million net worth, per Celebrity Net Worth.
While Cabrera’s secret family cost him millions, his talents on the baseball field have ensured he is still well off.
