Mike Greenberg Boldly Predicts Dallas Cowboys Won’t Win the NFC East After a Recent $10 Million Move

With Dak Prescott expected to be under center next season and getting his contract taken care of, most NFL pundits believe the Dallas Cowboys will win the NFC East in 2021. ESPN’s Mike Greenberg isn’t one of those experts.

On Tuesday’s edition of Get Up on ESPN, Mike Greenberg boldly predicted that the Cowboys would lose the NFC East in 2021 after a recent $10 million move made in the division.

Dak Prescott got $160 million from the Cowboys

The Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones finally came to their senses and gave Dak Prescott a four-year contract worth $160 million. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback has thrown for 17,634 yards and 106 touchdowns since making his NFL debut in 2016.

Prescott suffered a gruesome injury last season in Week 5 against the New York Giants. The Cowboys struggled without Prescott, as the team finished 6-10 and missed the playoffs.

Dallas averaged only 24.7 points per game in 2020, which was 17th in the NFL. The Cowboys should be much more explosive on offense next season since Prescott is one of the best gunslingers in the league.

The Giants (Daniel Jones) and Philadelphia Eagles (Jalen Hurts) have young, unproven quarterbacks, so they are not expected to compete for the division crown in 2021. The Washington Football Team won the NFC East last season and started Taylor Heinicke in the Wild Card game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Washington and Dallas will likely compete for the NFC East title, with the Cowboys getting the edge by most NFL aficionados since Dak Prescott is back.

However, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg is one of the few pundits who believes Washington will repeat as division champions, especially after the $10 million move they made in free agency.

Mike Greenberg says Ryan Fitzpatrick makes Washington the best team in the NFC East

Ryan Fitzpatrick signed with Washington on a one-year deal worth $10 million. He is expected to head to training camp as the starter.

Mike Greenberg thinks Washington will win the NFC East in 2021 with Fitzpatrick as the starting QB. The Harvard grad is the only quarterback in NFL history to start and throw touchdowns with eight different teams.

“Over the last three years, Ryan Fitzpatrick has a higher completion percentage than Tom Brady, more yards per attempt than Russell Wilson, and a higher QBR than Deshaun Watson,” Greenberg said. “You put him together with that Washington defense, the Washington Football Team is definitively the team to beat in the NFC East.”

Fitzpatrick started seven games in 2020 for the Miami Dolphins. He completed 68.5% of his passes and threw 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The Cowboys have a terrible defense, while Washington has an up-and-coming unit with Chase Young leading the way. If Ryan Fitzpatrick can avoid those high turnover games he has from time to time and put up enough points to cover his defense, Washington could make Mike Greenberg’s prediction come to fruition.

The Cowboys haven’t won the NFC East since 2018

The 2018 season was the last time the Cowboys won the NFC East and made the playoffs. The team went 10-6 in the regular season and defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card Round before losing to the LA Rams in the Divisional Round.

Dak Prescott will have the Cowboys’ offense producing more points than the unit did in 2020. However, if Dallas can’t stop anyone on defense, it doesn’t matter how lethal Prescott and Co. are.

Since Washington already has a good defense and is coming off a division championship, Mike Greenberg wouldn’t be surprised if the team wins the NFC East again over the Cowboys after adding Ryan Fitzpatrick.
