Mike McCarthy Believes Cowboys Have No. 1 Receiver Not Named Amari Cooper

The Dallas Cowboys have moved in a new direction this offseason with the firing of longtime head coach Jason Garrett and hiring Mike McCarthy in his place. It has shifted the entire dynamic of the franchise in hopes of finally breaking through the mold. That has also seen McCarthy quickly come away impressed by his new team, which he has issued strong praise for another wide receiver that he believes shares No.1 wide receiver qualities like Amari Cooper.

The Cowboys are coming off the heels of a disappointing 2019 season that saw them fall just short of the playoffs.

That has seen their front office work diligently to put together an even more talented roster while retaining the likes of Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper. The franchise also made the bold move to take former Oklahoma standout wideout CeeDee Lamb in the first round of this year’s draft.

All that has only further heightened the level of expectations for the franchise ahead of the 2020 campaign. It has also seen Mike McCarthy come away quite impressed by another wide receiver on the roster.

In the first several months on the job, Mike McCarthy has taken great attention to detail in assessing his team’s roster.

That has seen him gather a strong admiration for the Cowboys’ highly talented group of wide receivers. McCarthy has voiced that he believes Michael Gallup is a bonafide No.1 wide receiver talent, according to Dallascowboys.com.

“Let’s make it clear. Michael Gallup’s a No. 1 receiver in my view. I think we’re very fortunate to have three players with that level of potential to go out and play at that level,” McCarthy said of Gallup, along with Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. “I’ve been so impressed not only with what Michael’s done on film last year. He was definitely one of the players that really jumped off the video during the offseason study. Because I didn’t know a whole lot about Michael until last year. He’s primed to take that next step.”

Gallup is coming off an impressive 2019 season where he broke out to put forth a career-best year with 66 catches for 1,107 receiving yards and six touchdowns. That included posting four games with more than 100 receiving yards and seven games with at least five receptions. Gallup showed superstar potential behind his big-play ability that only excelled playing opposite of Amari Cooper.

That isn’t to say that he has taken over as the top receiving threat, but that he can excel in that role. Gallup didn’t double down on that praise from McCarthy, but he did welcome it. If anything, it speaks to the tremendous talent that Dallas has assembled at the wide receiver position.

The Cowboys are hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2019 campaign, where they let an NFC East division title slip out of their grasp.

Dallas has an opportunity to put forth a historic campaign starting in the coming weeks as they have a loaded offense with plenty of talent. There is a real possibility that the franchise has the rare opportunity to possess three wide receivers with more than 1,000 receiving yards.

That feat has only been accomplished five times in league history. The last time that occurred was in 2008 when the Arizona Cardinals had Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Breaston reached that mark. Cooper and Gallup are coming off being the first pair of Cowboys wide receivers to post 1,000 receiving yards in the same seasons since 2006.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys continue to sing praise toward CeeDee Lamb’s strong start to training camp. The pieces are in place for Dallas to bounce back in a significant way by competing for much more than an NFC East division title.
