NCAA Tournament: Saint Peter’s Massive Upset Over Kentucky Just Gifted the MAAC $4 Million

March Madness is here. The first full day of the NCAA men’s Tournament was entertaining from start to finish. What else is new?

The Kentucky Wildcats saw their name erased from the brackets after a stunning loss to Saint Peter’s. The Peacocks, a small school from New Jersey, defeated the SEC powerhouse led by John Calipari.

This was one of the most shocking upsets in NCAA Tournament history, and the second year in a row a 15-seed moves on. Not only that, but Saint Peter’s massive performance earned their conference $4 million.

Saint Peter’s huge night earned the MAAC a $4 million paycheck

The Peacocks have to be ecstatic after the massive upset. They didn’t back down and fought to the very end with a popular Final Four pick — and a team many picked to win the entire tournament.

As Myron Medcalf reports, Saint Peter’s netted a minimum of $4 million for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. That is some nice cash for one of the smaller Division 1 college basketball conferences.

Want another fun stat? This year, Saint Peter’s made $0 from its basketball program, while Kentucky made plenty.

Just a few years back, Saint Peter’s was at the bottom of the conference. Now, they pulled off a historic evening and a ton of money in the process.

It was a pretty good night for the Peacocks, and their head coach didn’t waver after the victory.

Peacocks head coach Shaheen Holloway has turned things around drastically and is making a name for himself at the NCAA Tournament

Shaheen Holloway. Know the name.

Time and time again, we have seen small-school head coaches succeed in March and end up with bigger jobs shortly after. Andy Enfield led Florida Gulf Coast and Dunk City to a Sweet 16 run before getting a job at USC.

Loyola Chicago’s marvelous run got Porter Moser a job at Oklahoma. Perhaps Holloway is the next guy in line for a promotion — and he deserves it after this.

Holloway appears to make less than many of the Wildcats assistants, yet his team is moving on to the Round of 32 with a Sweet 16 trip on their minds.

Despite the monstrous win, Holloway also insisted he wasn’t nervous. He was as cool as a cucumber.

This man is made for big-time college hoops games.

Could Saint Peter’s be this year’s Oral Roberts?

In the 2021 NCAA Tournament, Oral Roberts defied the odds and made a Sweet 16 appearance. They were close to upsetting Arkansas and sneaking into the Elite Eight before coming up short.

Can the Peacocks be this year’s Oral Roberts? The way they played on Thursday night certainly shows their talent.

Holloway has this team playing terrific basketball, and Murray State and San Francisco battled it out in an overtime thriller right after.

So, if Saint Peter’s gets by Murray State, they will be the second straight 15-seed to make the Sweet 16.

That is history, and this is called March Madness for a reason.

The Peacocks dance for another day, and Kentucky and Coach Calipari will have a long offseason as his future gets questioned once again.
