New York Mets Star Pete Alonso Made a Bold Claim About His Teammate Jacob deGrom

The New York Mets have two of MLB’s top players in Pete Alonso and Jacob deGrom. You get the best of both worlds with the two. Alonso is one of the best power hitters in the game, and deGrom is one of the top pitchers.

Recently Alonso made a strong claim about the success of his teammate deGrom.

Pete Alonso has blossomed into one of the best hitters in the league

The Mets first baseman has had success, and he has not been in the league that long. Alonso was a second-round pick by the Mets in the 2016 MLB draft. The Mets were high on Alonso after his career at the University of Florida. During his time in the minors, Alonso posted impressive numbers. Alonso was the Mets fourth-ranked prospect going into the 2018 season by MLB.com.

In 2018, he played in the All-Star Futures Game, and he went on to win the Joe Bauman Home Run Award, which is given to the Minor League baseball player who hit the most regular-season home runs. Alonso made the Opening Day roster for the Mets during the 2019 season and started at first base. He hit his first career home run on April 1, and on April 9, he had his first multi-home run game. Alonso displayed power at the plate early on during his rookie season. He became the second player in Mets history to hit the most home runs before the All-Star break with 30.

Alonso really made a name for himself when he competed in the 2019 Home Run Derby. In an exciting battle, he defeated Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round. He became the second rookie joining Aaron Judge to win the contest, and he also was named to the All-Star team. Alonso finished his rookie season, hitting 53 home runs, which set the record for most rookie home runs. He had a rookie season to remember and was named the NL Rookie of the Year.

The dominance of Jacob deGrom

The Mets have enjoyed the presence of deGrom during the last two seasons. He made his MLB debut in 2014 and finished the season with a 9-6 record through 22 starts with a 2.69 ERA. The next season he made his first All-Star team, and he started to become one of the league’s top pitchers. Over the next few years, deGrom numbers improved, and in 2018 he led the league posting a 1.70 ERA. He also won the NL Cy Young Award that season too.

His dominance continued the following season when he won the NL Cy Young again after posting an 11-8 record with a 2.43 ERA. He led the NL in strikeouts in 2019 with 255. There’s no question that deGrom has been one of the top pitchers in the league, and he has certainly proved that.

deGrom has started the shortened 2020 season off strong. Through eight games, he has a 3-1 record with a 1.69 ERA and 70 strikeouts. Alonso has always enjoyed watching his teammate take the mound and dominate. “He’s a Hall of Famer. He should be a Hall of Famer. He’s tremendous. …not just talent-wise, but he’s one of the guys that’s a smart pitcher and just has absolutely electric stuff,” Alonso said in a Yahoo Sports article. “So when you combine talent and brains, you’re going to get an absolutely tremendous athlete.”

deGrom is on pace to win another Cy Young even with the shortened season. He has great command with his pitches and knows how to make batters swing and miss. Alonso’s bold claim that deGrom should be in the Hall of Fame shows how dominant deGrom has been throughout his MLB career. If he can continue to pitch well throughout his career, there’s no question he’ll be in the Hall of Fame one day.
