‘I don’t think he’s good enough’ – Mark Schwarzer Thinks $100 Million Manchester United Star Will Not Have a Future Under Ruben Amorim
Former Premier League star Mark Schwarzer has said he does not see Antony having a future at Manchester United under new manager Ruben Amorim. Schwarzer believes not only is the Brazilian not good enough to play for Man Utd, but he also does not have the quality to make it in the Premier League.
Antony Has Been a Disappointment for Manchester United
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag brought Antony to Old Trafford shortly after taking charge, with the club paying a mammoth €95 million ($100.9 million) to secure his services from Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Antony joined the club on the back of a decent season, during which he scored eight goals and provided four assists in 23 league matches.
Antony’s debut season at Manchester United was a bit of a hit-and-miss, as he scored eight goals and provided three assists in 44 games across competitions. There was expectation that he would come good in his second season, but that did not turn out to be the case, as his output took a massive plunge. Across the 2023-24 season, he played 38 games, scoring thrice and providing two assists. He only scored one goal in 29 Premier League games last term.
Antony’s struggles have extended to the 2024-25 season, as he has scored once in five matches across competitions.
Mark Schwarzer Thinks Ruben Amorim Will Ax Antony
Under Amorim, Manchester United are gearing up to reclaim lost glory, and Schwarzer believes Antony will not be a part of their redemption arc.
In his column for Optus Sport, the ex-Middlesbrough goalkeeper wrote:
“Antony is someone I don’t see having a future at the club. I don’t think he’s good enough, I don’t think he’s a Premier League player and I certainly don’t think he’s a Manchester United player.
“Amorim has a number of adjustable players who could suit his system, and he’s going to need players like that, but he also has a number who I just can’t see adapting or fitting into the new way.”
Antony, 24, sees his Manchester United contract expire on June 30, 2027. According to Transfermarkt, the former Ajax winger is currently worth just €20 million ($21.1 million).
