One of the biggest sports gambling events of the year is on the horizon, and is set to break records across the United States. It has been estimated that Americans are going to place a combined $3.1 billion worth of wagers on March Madness in 2025, a figure that more than doubles what the most recent Super Bowl pulled in.

US Will See Estimated $3.1 Billion Worth Of Bets On March Madness

The steady legalization of sports gambling across the country has caused a massive boom for the industry. There seem to be new records broken every year, and 2025 will be no different.

The Super Bowl LIX that was played between the Chiefs and Eagles in early February saw the highest betting total ever in the NFL. It was estimated that $1.39 billion was wagered on the big game, which shares the designation with March Madness of being the most popular betting events on the sports calendar.

But experts say that the popular yearly basketball tournament is going to see a number that more than doubles what the Super Bowl brought in. According to the American Gaming Association, sportsbooks around the country are anticipating seeing a collective $3.1 billion come in on March Madness from gamblers across the country.

The number is up from the last two March Madness tournaments, which saw an estimated $2.7 billion wagered in each.

As of early 2025, there are 38 states across the US that have legalized sports gambling in some fashion, in addition to Washington DC. It is estimated that the 2024 calendar year saw more than $150 billion in total sports wagers, and the United States has seen nearly $500 billion in legal bets since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was repealed in 2018.
