Professional sports leagues have been forced to pivot this week due to the wildfires in the Los Angeles area. But there is another weather phenomenon that is happening in a different part of the country, as it is now a snow and ice storm that will affect at least one NBA game this weekend.

NBA Postpones Game Due To Winter Storm In Atlanta, Georgia

Changes have come to the schedules of all three current major sports this past week. It started with the NHL, with the LA Kings postponing Wednesday’s matchup against the Calgary Flames. The trend continued into Thursday, when the NBA announced that it was pushing back the game between the Lakers and Hornets to a later date. The NFL followed suit, announcing that they would be relocating Monday night’s Wild Card matchup between the Vikings and Rams to Glendale, Arizona.

There will be big changes to the NBA schedule on Saturday, as well, but not all of the postponements are due to the horrific situation in Los Angeles.

Across the country, there is a different weather phenomenon taking place. Areas in the southern part of the US were blanketed with a massive snowstorm on Thursday night and into Friday, with effects being felt from Texas all the way to North Carolina. Some places that typically see just a few inches of snow per year got double their yearly expectancy in a single storm, including Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee.

One of the areas that has been adversely affected has been Atlanta, Georgia. A storm on Friday dumped snow and ice in Northwest Georgia, causing dangerous travel conditions. The NBA decided to prioritize the safety of both the players and fans by postponing Saturday’s game between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks, and a makeup date has not yet been announced.

It makes for three games on Saturday’s slate that are now postponed. The Lakers’ home game against the Spurs has now been pushed back due to the wildfires, and the Clippers’ contest against the Hornets suffered the same fate.
