2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios won his first competitive tennis match in nearly 2 1/2 years at the Miami Open on Wednesday.  Kyrgios prevailed in a high-quality three-set match with American Mackenzie McDonald.

Kyrgios lost the first set but found his game in the second and third.  McDonald played well, but Kyrgios managed one break each set in the second and third to get the win.

After the win, Kyrgios took a moment to absorb what happened for the first time in 896 days.

What Nick Kyrgios Said After The Match

Kyrgios told Tennis Channel‘s Prakash Armitraj that he is enjoying the process because his wrist injury required him to be out of the game for a couple of years.  He told Armitraj that his wrist was numb after that match.  Kyrgios was not sure if that was a good or bad thing. He hopes his body recovers well but has no idea what to expect.

He said that he took for granted his health as a young player.  It was the one thing he wanted back so badly after his injury because he did not know if he would ever play again.

Kyrgios will face Karen Khachanov in the second round.  Khachanov has a 2-1 head-to-head record against Kyrgios.  Kyrgios joked with Armitraj that he may have to celebrate a little on Wednesday night after the win, but that remains to be seen.

What Nick Kyrgios Did Not Say After The Match

Kyrgios was not asked about and did not comment on the PTPA civil lawsuit against the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA filed on March 18, 2025.  He is named as a plaintiff in the case.

He did talk about the case with Sky Sports at the Miami Open.

The Tennis Channel does not want to acknowledge or discuss this topic at all.  Yesterday, Armitraj interviewed Sorana Cirstea after her first-round win.  She is also named as a plaintiff in the case.

Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic are the biggest names tied to the case that aims to improve conditions for the players.
