NFL Draft Analyst Todd McShay Reveals Why Malik Willis Can Be a Top-15 NFL QB

The 2022 NFL Draft doesn’t feature a deep crop of talented college football quarterbacks like in 2021. However, that doesn’t mean none of the prospects can enjoy success at the next level. Malik Willis is a player who several QB-needy teams should be keeping an eye on heading into April’s draft.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay is driving the Liberty signal-caller’s hype train. While there might not be a consensus surefire prospect at the position this time around, McShay believes Willis has what it takes to become the best of the bunch when it’s all said and done.

ESPN’s Todd McShay loves Malik Willis’ upside

Todd McShay is one of the most widely-respected NFL draft analysts in the business. While he’s not a fortune-teller, his opinion holds a great deal of weight. Well, the ESPN analyst thinks very highly of Liberty’s Malik Willis.

During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, McShay weighed in on the projected first-rounder’s game and his future in the league.

“He’s coming out of two years at Liberty,” McShay said. “Strongest arm in the class. He steps into the league as one of the three most dynamic athletes at the quarterback position right away. But he’s not there mentally yet because it’s just two years starting after transferring from Auburn.”

McShay believes Willis may take some time to develop, but he has tremendous upside.

“I’d love to see him in a situation where he doesn’t get thrown in right away, where he has people around who can develop him. If this guy gets the right situation and is coached properly, and has an organization get behind him. He’s got an opportunity to not only be the best quarterback in this class but to be one of the best 15 quarterbacks in the league, and that’s saying a heck of a lot.”

How does the Liberty standout stack up against other QBs in 2022 NFL Draft?

As Todd McShay suggested, Malik Willis has a tremendous amount of upside. The Liberty Flames star impressed during his two years as a starter. He finished with 5,107 passing yards, 47 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions in 13 games. Willis added 1,822 rushing yards and 27 scores.

There may not be a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback in this upcoming class. Willis undoubtedly makes a strong case. Depending on who you ask, you could get Matt Corral, Kenny Pickett, or Sam Howell for an answer.

Each of the prospects has aspects of their game that stand out. However, Willis screams upside and star potential. He’s the most electric playmaker of the group, and he has an absolute cannon for an arm. Sure, he doesn’t have elite size or a great deal of experience, but he makes up for it with the rest of his game and intangibles.

If Malik Willis lands in the right situation, he could have a bright future in the NFL.

Best potential landing spots for Willis

It will be interesting to see how the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft unfolds in terms of quarterbacks. When checking out some of the most reputable draft analysts’ mock drafts, there’s not much consensus on which signal-caller will come off the board first.

In his latest mock, Todd McShay has Pitt’s Kenny Pickett going 18th overall to the New Orleans Saints. However, he has the Pittsburgh Steelers grabbing Malik Willis two picks later at No. 20.

“It’s pretty clear he has the most upside of the class’ quarterbacks,” McShay said. “Is he ready to take over right away? That’s another discussion.”

The ESPN analyst suggests the Liberty standout might need one year in the pros to develop and possibly learn behind a veteran. Pittsburgh makes a lot of sense after the Steelers just signed Mitch Trubisky. The Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons could also be in play, with Russell Wilson now in Denver and Matt Ryan on his last legs.

Malik Willis has the tools to be successful wherever he lands. However, landing in the right spot could elevate him to new heights.
