Murray played college football for the University of Oklahoma Sooners, following in the footsteps of 2018 top overall pick, quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Murray threw for 42 touchdowns and 4,361 yards. Showing himself as a threat with his legs as well as his arm, Murray also rushed for 1,001 yards with 12 touchdowns. He led the Sooners to a Big 12 championship and an appearance in the first round of the college football playoff where they fell to Alabama, 45-34.

While Murray and the Sooners’ season ended in disappointment, he did receive the highest individual honor an NCAA football player can achieve: he was named the winner of the 2018 Heisman Trophy.

What other sport did Kyler Murray play?

Murray played baseball during his sophomore and junior seasons at Oklahoma. He saw limited action in his first season, playing in only 27 games, but his numbers increased his junior year. Murray played in 51 games, starting 50, and batted .296 with a .398 on-base percentage. He hit 10 home runs with 47 runs batted in.

Due to his sheer athleticism, the Oakland Athletics drafted Murray in the first round of the MLB Draft a few years ago. Declaring for the NFL draft means Murray is foregoing a career in baseball.

Where is Kyler Murray expected to be selected in the NFL Draft?

NFL experts hail Murray as a perfect fit for the league. He is ranked the No. 2 quarterback in the draft by ESPN draft experts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper, Jr. Kiper predicts Murray will go No. 8 overall, with McShay predicting he goes 13th.

Others believe he will go higher.

There were rumors that new Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury may take Murray with the number one overall pick. This was due to Kingsbury’s praise of Murray while playing against him in the Big 12 as head coach at Texas Tech.

While Kingsbury debunked these rumors, Murray going with a high pick near the top of the first round isn’t a totally impossible scenario. One of the teams needing a quarterback (or some searching for an upgrade) could easily move on the talented Murray.

Murray was measured by the Oklahoma athletic staff as being “5-foot-9 and 7/8 inches in socks.” As soon as Murray declared for the draft, his height became a possible sticking point for some teams.

NFL quarterbacks are typically taller players in order to see over the offensive and defensive lines and have better vision down the field. Murray’s size doesn’t necessarily mean he will not be successful at the pro level, however. If the success of shorter quarterbacks such as Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, and others is any indication, Murray’s success (or lack thereof) at the next level will rest on more than just his height.
