The Seattle Seahawks are off to a blazing start to the 2019 season, having won five out of their first six games. It has been primarily led by the stellar play of star quarterback Russell Wilson, who is off to a career-best start to a single campaign that is more than proving to be worth his record-breaking extension. Beyond that, it has thrust him ahead of reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes in one impressive category.
Russell Wilson’s strong start to 2019 campaign
Heading into his eighth season in the league, Wilson has firmly established himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL.
The 30-year-old has taken that a step further to begin the 2019 campaign as he has played arguably the best football of his career. Wilson is currently eighth with 1,704 passing yards while being tied for second with 14 touchdown passes, second with 9.0 yards per attempt and a 72.5% completion rate and first with a 124.7 passer rating.
Wilson has also tacked on 151 rushing yards on 36 attempts with three touchdowns. He is on pace to record 4,544 passing yards with 37 touchdown passes. He has yet to throw a single interception in his first 189 attempts this season. Wilson’s phenomenal start has also put him at the top of the list of Mahomes in one regard.
Russell Wilson becomes betting favorite to win MVP over Patrick Mahomes
Wilson is off to a career-best pace in 2019 while the Seahawks are experiencing a large amount of success, which has foreseeably put him in the MVP conversation.
It has become a crowded discussion with several other players such as Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, and Christian McCaffrey, all making strong cases to earn the unique honor. However, betting odds for the award in Las Vegas have shifted to Wilson being the favorite to win it over the Kansas Chiefs star quarterback, according to David Purdum of ESPN.
Wilson, who has never won MVP and started the season with 20-1 odds to win the award, is now 2-1, just ahead of Mahomes at 5-2 at Caesars Sportsbook.
Mahomes has dropped off the torrid pace he had last season, but he’s been one of the productive quarterbacks in the league. He’s currently first with 2,104 passing, tied for second with Wilson with 14 touchdown passes, and second with a 111.9 passer rating. It has been the Chiefs’ struggles over the last few weeks, dropping their previous two contests.
There may be stiff competition for the award, but Wilson has quickly engrained himself fully into the conversation. His strong play has been the core reason for the Seahawks’ early-season success that could elevate them towards another playoff berth and possibly much more.
Russell Wilson has Seahawks on playoff trajectory
Since taking over as the starting quarterback for the Seahawks, the franchise has experienced a huge amount of success with Wilson under center.
The path looks to be continuing this season with them on pace to grab their seventh postseason berth in Wilson’s first eight years. Seattle hasn’t played the toughest of schedules, but they have taken care of business, pushing their way to just one game behind the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West division lead.
It shouldn’t diminish the stellar start that Wilson has had that may finally give him the recognition he deserves as being one of the game’s best quarterbacks. His continued success throwing the ball has his team in a position to potentially put together a special season.
In the meantime, Wilson is heading at a historic pace that could lead him to something that he has never done before in his illustrious NFL career.
