Like the best players on the ice, the 2015-16 NHL season is flying by. And yet, the truth is, teams still have a long road ahead of them. This road will be filled with big hits, plenty of stitches, and a fair amount of scraps (we assume). It will also contain nifty goals, incredible saves, and some fancy skating. With all the possibilities, one should expect this season of hockey to remain fun for everyone.
As it is with most sports, hockey isn’t just about watching the game and enjoying the outcome. Sometimes, the risk takers like to throw a little money around. And when this happens, it’s always a good idea to know where the oddsmakers in Vegas stand. Therefore, will the 2015-16 season in full swing, here’s a look at the five teams most likely to win this year’s Stanley Cup.
5. Washington Capitals
- Odds: 10-1
Through their first 18 games of the season, the Washington Capitals have racked up 25 points, outscored their opponents by 13 goals and hold the No. 2 spot in the Metropolitan Division. As long as superstar Alex Ovechkin plays like we know he can and the rest of the team lives up to its potential, there’s no reason why the Capitals can’t make a run at the Stanley Cup.
4. Chicago Blackhawks
- Odds: 9-1
The Chicago Blackhawks do not look like the same team that won last year’s Stanley Cup and captured three championships in the past six seasons. So far in 19 games, they’ve only managed to earn 23 points and currently sit tied for fourth place in the Central Division. On the bright side, Patrick Kane has been on a tear to start the 2015-16 season, leading the NHL in points and goals and tied at the top in plus/minus. Clearly he didn’t let his legal issues distract him.
3. Montreal Canadiens
- Odds: 17-2
The Montreal Canadiens have won 14 of their first 19 games and hold a seven-point lead atop the Atlantic Division. With this group’s overall experience and a player of Carey Price’s ability between the pipes, not only is repeating as division champions a strong possibility, but lifting Lord Stanley’s Cup could end up happening as well.
2. Dallas Stars
- Odds: 8-1
The Dallas Stars are 8-2 in their last 10 games, have won four contests in a row, and have outscored the opposition by 21 goals. Through the first 20 games of the season, the Stars hold a 16-4-0 record, sit at the top of the Central Division, and have the most points in the NHL with 32. You better believe this team is thinking Stanley Cup.
1. New York Rangers
- Odds: 15-2
The New York Rangers started off the 2015-16 off on the right foot and have only gotten stronger since. Thanks to a 14-3-2 mark, the Rangers have 30 points are in first place in the Metropolitan Division. If New York can replicate what it did last season — finishing with 113 points and the capturing the Presidents’ Cup — and netminder Henrik Lundqvist can remain steadfast in goal, then the Rangers stands a good chance of hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup at the end of the year.
