Jonathan Isaac’s basketball career
Isaac was a standout in high school. During his freshman and sophomore years, he attended Barron Collier High School in Naples, Florida. He transferred to the International School of Broward his junior and senior years and also attended IMG Academy for a postgraduate year. During his time at IMG, he averaged 17.6 points and 10 rebounds per game. Isaac was selected to play in the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit All-Star games. Coming out of high school, he was a five-star recruit.
Isaac decided to stay in his home state and attend Florida State University. Before committing to Florida State, he thought about entering the 2016 NBA draft out of IMG but decided to take the college route. Before he started his freshman year at Florida State, he was considered a preseason watch for the Karl Malone Award, given to the top power forward in college basketball. As a freshman, Isaac was one of the top players on the team. Florida State was also one of the best teams in all of college basketball. Isaac was named to the ACC. All-Freshman team. After one year of college basketball, he entered the draft.
Jonathan Isaac becoming an NBA player
Going into the draft, Isaac was one of the top prospects. During his first year, he dealt with an injury early in the season and only played in 27 games. He averaged 5.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. As a rookie, Isaac displayed his defensive abilities and was one of the top rookie defenders in the league though he did not play the whole season. His second year was a big improvement. He averaged 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks.
When the 2019-20 season started, Isaac started in all 32 games that he played, and his statistics continued to improve. He was averaging 12 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks before being forced to miss the rest of the season due to an injury he suffered. Though his season was done, Isaac pursued something much greater to him.
Jonathan Isaac is an ordained minister and NBA player
Early in March, Isaac received his certificate of ordination at JUMP Ministries Global Church in Orlando. It was a big moment for Isaac, and something that he was pursuing since he got into the NBA Isaac did an interview on the Sports Spectrum Podcast in 2018 and talked about how a Bible verse really touched him.
“It was one of those moments where you just kind of get punched in the gut by the Word,” he said. “And I was like, ‘Wow that’s me, this is exactly what I do. I say “Lord, Lord” but I don’t live like it, I don’t know it.’ And it was almost like a fork in the road for me, like I’m either going to drop this whole thing and do me, or I’m going to kinda seek it out and figure out what it really is. And I had that time period of just seeking.” Now Isaac is an ordained minister and can share the Word of God to others and possibly help change lives.
