Over the last several months, star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has continued to be mentioned heavily in trade rumors. The chatter hasn’t dwindled, which remains around him into the offseason with there being a stable level of uncertainty around Beckham Jr.’s long-term future with the Cleveland Browns. That has created trade chatter ahead of the upcoming draft that involved the Minnesota Vikings that turned out to be untrue. However, there is building talk that Beckham Jr. is heading toward an eventual departure in Cleveland that may be all due to quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s “false” trade rumors with Vikings
Earlier this week, there was trade chatter that stemmed around possible keen interest from the Vikings in a pre-draft deal.
That had come from a rumor that surfaced from WFAN Sports Radio’s Marc Malusis stated that he heard that the Browns and Vikings had centered on trade discussions that would exchange Beckham Jr. for a second and fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft.
It began to gain some traction before the chatter made itself around to Browns’ Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta, who stated that the rumor was “completely false.” There may not have been real traction, but there is always a bit of truth in chatter like that.
There has been some uneasiness from Beckham Jr. over the last several months that does suggest it may not be a long-term situation in Cleveland for him. There is building chatter that his days with the franchise are numbered because of one aspect.
Odell Beckham Jr.’s future in Cleveland linked to Baker Mayfield
The trade chatter around Beckham Jr. hasn’t shown any dwindling over the last several months.
Although the rumors concerning the Vikings may not have been realistic, Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report is reporting that there is chatter that it’s a matter of when Beckham Jr. will be traded and that will come due to his shortcomings with Mayfield.
These sources all believe it’s only a matter of time before Beckham is traded from the Browns, and they don’t believe it’s because of a perceived attitude problem with Beckham.
“People have the wrong idea of who he is as a person,” said one general manager.
The issue, instead, is that Beckham isn’t a good fit with quarterback Baker Mayfield.
It hasn’t been an entirely smooth transition for Beckham Jr. since he arrived in Cleveland. A sports hernia injury impacted his play on the field in the 2019 season, but the connection with Mayfield wasn’t as constant as many had hoped.
Beckham Jr. earned his fifth 1,000 receiving-yard campaign, but it didn’t come without some internal conflict along the way. It came from indirect comments about his future, while his performance didn’t reach up to his standards.
Nonetheless, his relationship with Mayfield will be crucial to his future in Cleveland.
Will the Browns trade Odell Beckham Jr.?
Regardless of what unfolds moving forward, Beckham Jr.’s name will always be tied to the trade rumor mill.
The Pro Bowler has been quite challenging to figure out he’s standing with the Browns. His relationship and production on the field will be critical factors, but what could shift things in either direction is Cleveland’s success.
Although the Browns didn’t live up to the massive hype last offseason, the team has put a new coaching staff in place under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Meanwhile, Beckham Jr. will have more comfort and chemistry in his second campaign with Mayfield.
Before Cleveland dives too firmly into the trade talks, the team may want to see what the star wideout can do in Stefanski’s offensive system.
