It has been over a decade since Oscar De La Hoya last stepped into a boxing ring as a fighter.

However, that itch hasn’t left him to compete as he has remained around the sport in his retirement. It has led to him to finally cave in to his desire to box again as he stated on Wednesday that he was going to take steps toward returning to the craft that made him a legendary sports icon, according to Steve Kim of ESPN.

“The rumors are true, and I’m going to start sparring in the next few weeks,” De La Hoya said.

“It’s a real fight,” he said. “I miss being in the ring, I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it.”

De La Hoya’s last fight came in 2008 after he quit before the ninth round against Manny Pacquaio in December 2008. A few months after that bout, he announced his retirement at age 36. His recent push to get back into shape a few months ago has him feeling much better about his physical capabilities and truly got the passion for boxing again.

It hasn’t taken long for there to be a strong reaction to his comeback attempt as one current boxer has thrown his name in the hat as a possible opponent.

Oscar De La Hoya has flirted with the idea of returning to the ring over the last few months, which has led to his announced comeback attempt.

That news has quickly led to former unified light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan to take to Twitter to voice he wants a chance to fight De La Hoya.

Khan has not been in the ring since he knocked out Billy Dib back in June 2019. However, his desire to continue his boxing career hasn’t wavered as evident by teasing a fight against De La Hoya. Khan was ranked as the ninth-best active welterweight.

It has been tough sledding for Khan over the last few years since getting knocked out in the sixth round against Canelo Alvarez in May 2016. Khan still possesses a prominent name in the business and could be an intriguing comeback opponent for De La Hoya.

Time will tell with comeback attempt

With several recent boxing greats such as Mike Tyson making their comebacks, many have drawn concerns over their health.

Oscar De La Hoya is over a decade since his last fight and has only become older. He continues to voice his desire to fight some of the top fighters in the world, such as Canelo Alvarez, which put him in a scary spot. He may be quite confident in his ability, but that would require him to take on a fighter in the prime of his career while he hasn’t fought in 12 years.

The real test for him will come with the sparring and training to see where he is at physically. If his body can hold up from the workload in the coming weeks and months, expect him to make a real run at a return. Only time will tell if this will come to fruition.
