The Green Bay Packers have become entirely engulfed in a troubling situation regarding Aaron Rodgers’ strong desire to leave the franchise. The chatter has quickly moved toward the notion that massive change may lie ahead before the 2021 season. However, the Packers have swiftly attempted to cool the flames concerning that dialogue.
Aaron Rodgers voices he wants out of Green Bay
In the hours before the 2021 NFL draft, reports surfaced that Aaron Rodgers wants to leave the Packers.
The seismic shift has created plenty of dialogue. Since then, various other reports have emerged detailing that Rodgers wants the franchise to move on from general manager Brian Gutekunst.
All that has sent the Packers into a frenzy as they attempt to mend the matter with the three-time league MVP.
Packers frenetically push to quiet the storm around Aaron Rodgers’ future
Since the reports surfaced that Rodgers wants out of Green Bay, the organization has firmly rebuffed them.
The Packers have voiced their strong commitment to the three-time league MVP with no desire to trade him. Gutekunst said that he believes the franchise can work things out with him before the 2021 season.
“He’s our quarterback,” Gutekunst said via Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. “He’s our leader. We’ve been working through this for a little while now. I just think it might take some time. But he’s the guy that makes this thing go.”
Rodgers hasn’t moved away from his strong stance but has instead privately aired only disappointment that the news got out. Meanwhile, the Packers may be doing damage control while attempting to work the situation behind the scenes.
The front office is still giving the outward appearance that it remains all-in on Rodgers. However, its lack of commitment beyond his current deal and uneven efforts in providing him with more offensive weapons over the last few years have led to this point.
Until there is drastic internal change in Green Bay, Rodgers may not budge from his position ahead of the 2021 season.
Packers may be delaying the inevitable
The Packers have publicly experienced nothing short of a bumpy last few days.
The sense is that Green Bay wants to keep Rodgers on its terms. Those parameters are likely until he nears the end of his current deal that runs through the 2023 season.
The front office has had plenty of time to secure Rodgers under an extension and provide him with more offensive weapons. Instead, the team balked at extension talks back in January while making little to no effort to add offensive talent in free agency or the draft.
Rodgers has long seen the writing on the wall, and it’s all pushed him to want to dictate the next chapter of his career. Yes, he’s intrigued by the prospects of becoming the full-time host of Jeopardy!, but he remains committed to playing football.
Rodgers wants to extend his NFL career into his 40s with full command on how he finishes his playing days. The Packers don’t appear to want to venture down that route with the future Hall of Famer.
It may only be a matter of time before Rodgers finds himself in another NFL uniform.
