Patrick Mahomes Could Accomplish Something Tom Brady Never Did

Through his first few seasons in the league, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has quickly taken off into stardom in the NFL. Mahomes has skyrocketed to tremendous success in his brief time as he has gotten off to a historic start. Along the way, that has also drawn some early comparisons to future Hall of Famer Tom Brady concerning the path to the tremendous success that he has quite early in his career. That has already put him in the realm of achieving something that Brady never did.

Patrick Mahomes’ NFL career

After sitting almost his entire rookie campaign behind Alex Smith, Mahomes took over the reins as the starting quarterback in Kansas City in his second year.

Since then, he has lifted off into NFL stardom behind his incredible production and success over the last two seasons. It has seen him set numerous records along the way, such as becoming the youngest to not only win the regular-season MVP award but also youngest to earn both that honor and the Super Bowl MVP.

He is the only quarterback in league history to record at least 5,000 passing yards in both college and the NFL. Mahomes is also alongside future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning as the only NFL players to have 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 passing yards in a single season. Among other accolades, he is the fastest to amass 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes (13 games), and 7,500 passing yards (24 games).

Mahomes has become the driving force of a powerhouse in the NFL that has reached back-to-back AFC title games and is coming off their first Super Bowl win in five decades. All that has pushed him into the opportunity to accomplish something that Brady never was able to achieve in his first four seasons.

Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win MVP award in 2020

Mahomes is coming off reaching the mountaintop of success by winning his first Super Bowl. Much of that was achieved behind the tremendous success leading the way with his arm offensively throughout the playoffs.

Although Mahomes saw his numbers predictably dip a bit from the historic 2018 campaign, he still managed to put forth an impressive year with 4,031 passing yards along with 26 touchdowns to five interceptions while holding a 111.5 passer rating. He accomplished that despite missing two games due to a dislocated kneecap.

With that in mind, Mahomes is the favorite to earn the 2020 regular-season MVP award ahead of reigning winner Lamar Jackson, who is coming off a record-breaking season. Jackson will likely be the biggest challenger to receive that honor, especially after what he showcased last year with his game-changing ability with both his arm and legs.

Nonetheless, it’s quite clear that Mahomes will be the odds-on favorite to earn the honor for the second time in his career in only his fourth year. As the comparisons continue to grow to Brady concerning his sustained success, it’s an accomplishment that the six-time Super Bowl champion never achieved.

Patrick Mahomes building a promising legacy

There is no question that Brady has become the gold standard for success at the quarterback position, which will likely continue to lead to Mahomes being tied more directly with him.

The Chiefs star quarterback has an opportunity to become the face of the league for the next decade while continuing to build on impressive success has had through his first two years as the starter. Mahomes is a bonafide game-changing talent that could quickly march his way into the conversation one of the greatest players in league history if he adds more Super Bowl rings to his resume.

The pressure will be there to live up to those expectations, but Mahomes appears to be poised to mark his own path.
