The Kansas City Chiefs, led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, snapped a 50-year championship drought after edging out the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54. Mahomes has added another impressive notch to his belt early in his NFL career as he was the driving force to lead them to a comeback win. Despite coming off the most significant achievement, he is already in line to add yet another incredible feat in the 2020 season.
Patrick Mahomes’ 2019 season
Mahomes entered the 2019 campaign after a breakout campaign that saw him earn his first MVP award behind a record-breaking performance.
Things had begun on a similar path, but a dislocated kneecap threw things off the track a bit as he missed a pair of games due to the injury. Mahomes returned to the field and picked up where he left off as he finished 10th with 4,031 passing yards with 26 touchdown passes to five interceptions while holding a 105.3 passer rating.
It wasn’t the type of eye-popping production that Mahomes had the season before, but he truly shined in the playoffs. He was the driving force of the team throughout their impressive run to the Super Bowl as he had 901 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes to two interceptions, and a 111.5 passer rating.
Mahomes helped guide his team back from double-digit deficits in each playoff game, which was topped by overcoming a 10-point margin in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. He led three touchdown-scoring drives in the quarter that lifted the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win. That made him the youngest player to ever win an MVP award and Super Bowl, surpassing Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith for that mark.
It has quickly led to sports betting books to place him atop of the list for one specific honor for the 2020 season.
Patrick Mahomes is betting favorite for 2020 MVP award
The 2019 season may have just wrapped, but it’s never too early for sports betting books to place odds on numerous awards and honors for next year.
That has seen the SuperBook label Mahomes as the odds-on favorite to secure his second MVP award with 4-1odds with Lamar Jackson not far behind him at 6-1. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that he’s coming off leading his team to the Super Bowl while he’s one a year removed from winning the award.
Mahomes could have been well on his way to serious contention in the 2019 campaign before he got hurt as he had 10 touchdown passes through the first four games played. There is much that could have changed, but it’s fair to speculate he could have put forth an MVP-deserving campaign.
Meanwhile, Jackson will certainly be in the picture after an incredible season that saw him become the unanimous choice for the honor. Beyond that, it’s clear that Mahomes could be in line to add another impressive feat to his ever-stacking resume in the 2020 season.
Patrick Mahomes’ legacy
Although it’s quite early in his career, Mahomes’ level of success and production has stacked up historically. He already established himself as an elite talent in the league that can be strongly argued as being the top quarterback.
The fact that he’s reached this level of performance this early in his career, it’s hard to envision him topping that. Mahomes has an opportunity in front of him to put together an illustrious career that could one day put him among the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
It may be too soon to put those type of expectations ahead of him, but he has that type of talent. Only time will tell, but there will certainly be many more entertaining seasons ahead for Mahomes in a Chiefs’ uniform.
