Pete Carroll’s Future With the Seahawks Just Got a Massive Boost After Ed Donatell Emerges as DC Candidate

The Seattle Seahawks begin the offseason with a ton of questions swirling around them. Will Russell Wilson be the quarterback in 2022?

Will Pete Carroll be the head coach? Also, who will be the defensive coordinator after Ken Norton Jr. was fired?

After a disappointing campaign, Seattle is exploring all avenues heading into 2022, including the future of Carroll. However, after Norton was fired as the DC, a few names popped up — and one frontrunner could be showing Seattle’s hand as far as Carroll’s future is concerned.

Seahawks targeting Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator, and he has ties with Pete Carroll

Donatell is the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator. So, why move to Seattle?

Well, first off, nobody knows what this Broncos staff will look like as they are in the market for a new head coach. The new hire will likely bring in his assistants and might part ways with Donatell.

However, there is another reason — Donatell and Carroll go way back.

Yes, Carroll and Donatell worked together in 1983. Unbelievable.

Then, they worked together for a few years on the New York Jets coaching staff. Pretty impressive, and Donatell has enjoyed a lengthy coaching career for a reason.

The connection is obvious, and Donatell being a candidate could signal that Carroll isn’t going anywhere.

The defense needs to improve after a terrible season

The Seahawks defense needs a drastic change. The team reached a new low — a franchise low — in takeaways this past season, making the decision to fire Norton inevitable.

Where do they go from here?

The trade to acquire Jamal Adams didn’t go as planned and depleted their draft pile. Although reports are conflicting by the day, the questions around Wilson remain and will continue for a few months.

Last season, the Seahawks fired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to change up the offense. Well, that didn’t exactly work, either.

However, the defense clearly needs a makeover, and perhaps Carroll resorts to another old friend in Donatell to fix what was once the daunted Legion of Boom group.

The Seahawks appear to be content with Pete Carroll — at least for now

The latest reports signal that Carroll is good to go — at least for now. After the season ended, he met with ownership, and, well, nothing negative came out.

Earlier in the season, questions came up about whether or not the Seahawks would get rid of Carroll and Wilson and start over. Now, as of January 19, all signs show that Carroll has at least one more season.

After all, if they were going to fire him, would they want to bring in Donatell? Wouldn’t the Seahawks rather wait and hire a head coach before interviewing assistants?

Nonetheless, maybe Donatell is what Carroll needs to help get the defense back on track. Or maybe Donatell will end up being another failed reunion — much like what happened with Norton (they worked at USC together).

Many questions are popping up in the Pacific Northwest, but sooner or later, they will be answered. As of now, it seems that Carroll is sticking around for at least one more try.

However, can the same be said for Wilson?

Who knows.
