The Dallas Cowboys have lost several key players in the offseason, including defensive end Randy Gregory. The Nebraska product enjoyed a productive 2021 season, and Jerry Jones and the front office were hopeful that he would re-up on a new contract. It appeared Dallas would get its wish, but Gregory said not so fast.
The fifth-year edge rusher spurned the Cowboys to sign a multiyear deal with the Denver Broncos in free agency. Gregory delivered a gut-punch to his former team. He also doesn’t have a glowing review of the front office or the fan base. Gregory didn’t hold back when clapping back at haters about his decision.
Randy Gregory rips Jerry Jones and Cowboys fans
Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has been catching a lot of heat lately. The Jacksonville, Florida native noticed, and he took to Twitter to clap back at chippy fans.
“Y’all opinions don’t pay my bills,” Gregory said.
Several Cowboys fans came back at Gregory with emotion-filled responses. However, the pass-rusher took the opportunity to set the record straight with a series of additional tweets.
“Your owners acted in bad faith all free agency,” he said. “They’ve been awfully quiet lately, huh? Wonder why lol. Can’t wait for you guys to ask them the same questions.”
Gregory appeared to be taking a shot at Jerry Jones and the front office for how they approached negotiations in the offseason. He also threw shade at Dallas’ fan base when a Twitter user claimed Gregory was upset.
“Nah that’s your toxic fan base that believe I owe them and their team something.”
Many in Dallas likely resent the edge rusher for backing out of contract
After a rough start to his NFL career, Randy Gregory appeared to be coming into his own in the Cowboys defense. He recorded 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, and six sacks in 12 games during the 2021 season.
Jerry Jones and company didn’t expect it would be too difficult to retain Gregory for 2022, but they were wrong.
Initial reports suggested that the 29-year-old would be signing a five-year, $70 million contract extension with the Cowboys. However, the deal fell through. According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, a change in contract language was a major turnoff for Gregory.
Instead, the 2015 second-rounder backed out of the contract and signed a similar deal with the Denver Broncos. It’s easy to understand the fans’ frustration. However, only Randy Gregory and the Cowboys’ top brass know what went down behind closed doors.
Gregory preparing for a fresh start with the Broncos
Randy Gregory’s NFL journey hasn’t been the smoothest ride. The Dallas Cowboys selected him with the 60th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he played sparingly in his first two seasons.
The league suspended Gregory multiple times for violating the substance abuse policy, causing him to miss the entire 2017 and 2019 seasons. However, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys maintained their belief in the former Cornhuskers star.
Sadly, it appears the relationship between the player and front office has soured. While Gregory won’t be returning to Dallas, he gets an opportunity to start fresh and be a major part of something special in Denver.
The Broncos made a massive splash by trading for Russell Wilson, creating plenty of excitement. The team has one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2021. Adding Gregory could make the unit even more dangerous in 2022.
Randy Gregory might have burned bridges in Dallas, but the Broncos are hoping he can leave the past where it belongs.
