Ravens CB Jimmy Smith and His Family Escaped a Life-Threatening Incident Involving Guns, a Hotel, and the LAX Airport
The NFL offseason is a time for relaxation and spending quality hours with loved ones. Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was trying to do these facets in LA after a long 2020 season.
Unfortunately, Smith and his family ran into some trouble.
Jimmy Smith and the Ravens won 11 games in 2020
Behind superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens won 11 games in 2020. They finished in second place in the AFC North Division with a record of 11-5.
Smith appeared in 11 games. Although he failed to record an interception, the one-time Super Bowl champion racked up 23 solo tackles and two tackles for loss.
The Ravens had the second-best defense in the NFL. The team gave up only 18.9 points per game. Despite the COVID-19 virus infecting many squad members, the Ravens still made the playoffs in the AFC.
In the Wild Card Round, Baltimore defeated the Tennessee Titans on the road by a final score of 20-13 for Jackson’s first career postseason win. However, the Ravens’ season ended in the Divisional Round versus the Buffalo Bills. Smith and Co. lost 17-3 to Josh Allen and the Bills.
Like many players, Jimmy Smith was looking forward to spending time with his family in sunny LA after the Ravens’ season ended. However, since he’s a well-known NFL player, Smith was the victim of a terrifying and life-threatening incident involving guns, a hotel, and the LAX Airport.
Jimmy Smith and his family were robbed at gunpoint in LA
According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Jimmy Smith and his family were followed from the LAX Airport to their LA hotel. Robbers then robbed Smith and Co. at gunpoint.
Fortunately, Smith and his family weren’t hurt. The Ravens released the following statement on the matter: “We are aware of the situation involving Jimmy Smith. We have spoken with Jimmy, and he and his family are safe.”
The robbers must have known who Smith was, which is why they followed him and his family to their hotel. The veteran CB has made millions of dollars during his career. The robbers were undoubtedly looking for money and jewelry.
Everyone within the Ravens organization is relieved that Smith and his family are still alive and weren’t hurt during the robbery. Even with COVID-19 going on, the world still has so many other alarming twists.
The hope is that LA police can capture the robbers and put them behind bars. Jimmy Smith, who is 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, couldn’t use his giant physique to fight the robbers since they had guns.
The California native will make $2 million next season
Before the 2020 season, the Ravens signed Jimmy Smith to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million. During the middle of the campaign, Baltimore gave the California native an extension worth up to $5 million.
Next season, Smith will have a base salary of $2 million. The extension includes a $500,000 signing bonus.
In 118 regular-season games with the Ravens, Jimmy Smith has 14 interceptions and 309 solo tackles. He was the 27th overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Colorado.
