Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale highlighted Herbert’s arm talent. His comments put him in an exclusive club with Michael Vick, Brett Favre, and Joe Flacco.
Justin Herbert is one of the best young QBs in the NFL
Justin Herbert is making the LA Chargers’ front office look like geniuses. He was the third quarterback taken in the 2020 NFL Draft, behind Tua Tagovailoa and Joe Burrow. However, he’s been better than both of them.
Herbert exploded as a rookie, passing for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns while completing 66.6% of his passes. He threw just 10 interceptions, which was rather impressive for a rookie quarterback. The Oregon product earned the 2020 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
Herbert broke out in his first NFL season but appeared to be just scratching the surface of the quarterback he can become. Year two is off to a hot start as well. He’s thrown for 1,576 yards, 13 touchdowns, and three interceptions through the first five games.
The second-year signal-caller is receiving praise from plenty of people around the league, including Bruce Arians. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach picked Herbert as the best QB under 26 years old.
Herbert has led the Chargers to a 4-1 start and is undoubtedly in the MVP conversation.
Ravens’ DC Wink Martindale gave Herbert a weird compliment
The Baltimore Ravens’ defense will have its hands full trying to slow down Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense.
Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is in awe of the 23-year-old’s raw arm talent. He made some interesting comments about Herbert’s abilities as a passer at the team’s media session.
“He’s one of those guys who can throw a strawberry through a battleship,” Martindale said per NFL.com. The analogy makes the mind wonder what exactly he means by that.
Regardless of the meaning, Herbert has a powerful arm. He has a cannon, and has proven that he can make all of the necessary throws.
The odd analogy has been used to describe QBs in the past
Wink Martindale’s strange strawberry-battleship analogy isn’t the first of its kind. Baltimore’s defensive coordinator previously used the same statement to describe a former Ravens quarterback.
“A big, strong kid that sits back there and he can throw a strawberry through a battleship,” he said of Joe Flacco when he coached for the Broncos. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Ravens and helped them win a Super Bowl.
In 2010, the former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach characterized Hall of Famer Brett Favre’s arm strength using the analogy.
It seems that Wink Martindale and Rex Ryan were in the same brainstorming session when they came up with this unique phrase. Justin Herbert’s a young quarterback and most likely has never heard those words before. However, it has to be nice to share a similar trait with Vick, Favre, and even Flacco.
If Herbert’s arm is that strong, Martindale and the Ravens defense could be in for a long day against the Chargers.
