In his first two seasons in the NBA, Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic has emerged as one of the league’s top talents. Doncic has become must-see TV on a nightly basis while leading his team to one of the best records in the Western Conference. The 20-year-old is one of the NBA’s most popular players that has much more to him than his impressive performance on a basketball court. Among those unique qualities is that the Slovenia native can speak fluent Spanish.
Luka Doncic’s upbringing
Before heading to the NBA, Doncic was making a name for himself as a teenager playing in Spain for the Real Madrid basketball team. He grew up the son of a basketball coach and former basketball player, which helped spark his interest in playing the sport.
Doncic had begun playing on an organized basketball at around seven years old with his primary school team in Ljubljana. He left the school when his father went to play for Union Olimpija, where he was given a chance to practice with children born in 1999.
During that time, Doncic worked his way up the ranks competing against kids a few years other than him and was earning a name for himself by age 12 playing in numerous tournaments in Slovenia. He had joined the club at the age of 13, where he began on the under-16 team to where he spent the next several years working his way up to make his professional debut in 2015.
He was the youngest to ever play professionally for Real Madrid at age 16. Doncic played with Real Madrid in Liga ACB and performed internationally in the EuroLeague before leaping to the NBA in the 2018 draft.

It was during his time with Real Madrid as a teenager where Doncic learned to speak Spanish.
According to Mike Schmitz of ESPN, he chose to pick up the language as a means to help him further understand the culture in Madrid while being able to communicate with his teammates and coaches. That skill alone has become a part of him and helped make the transition to playing in Spain an easier one.
The ability to speak Spanish has made Doncic more accessible worldwide in the NBA. The league has continued to grow into having a tremendous international presence, with many of its players coming from various countries outside of the United States.
Doncic’s ability to speak Spanish is one of four languages that he knows alongside Slovenian, Serbian, and English. All of that, along with his promising play on the court, has put a bright future ahead of him.
