New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is in his third NFL season. Darnold is looking to lead the Jets to another winning season after finishing 7-6 in 2019. He recently received an encouraging message from back quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco.
Flacco knows what it takes to be a winner, and he sees a lot of potential in Darnold.
Sam Darnold gearing up to have a successful future with the Jets
The Jets selected Darnold with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft after having a successful USC career. He signed a four-year contract worth $30.25 million guaranteed with a $20 million signing bonus. Darnold played his first regular-season game on September 10, 2018, during a Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions. He became the youngest opening-day starting quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger. Darnold finished the game with 198 passing yards and two touchdowns as the Jets won 48-17.
He started in 13 games his rookie season and finished with 2,865 passing yards and 17 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. The Jets finished with a 4-9 record that season. Darnold also finished with the highest completion percentage by a rookie quarterback in a single season at 57.7. He had the highest rookie quarterback rating through a minimum of seven games at 77.6.
The next season he saw improvement finishing with 3,024 passing yards and 19 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. Through his first two seasons, Darnold showed that he has what it takes to become a successful quarterback.
Darnold receiving encouraging words from back QB Joe Flacco
Darnold and the Jets did not get off to the start they wanted during the 2020 season as they currently have an 0-3 record. But, one teammate of Darnold sees potential in his future. Joe Flacco was once a Super Bowl champion and Super MVP with the Baltimore Ravens, and now he’s a backup to Darnold.
In an article from Yahoo! Sports, Flacco talked about Darnold’s abilities at the quarterback position. “He’s really talented — he really is,” Flacco said Tuesday. “I mean, he can make all the throws. He’s got good feet. Good head on his shoulders. It’s just about going out there and doing it consistently and playing together as a football team.” Those are words a starting quarterback needs to hear from a veteran who has had success before.
Joe Flacco knows what it takes to be a winner
Flacco had a lot of success during his career with the Ravens. He knows what it takes to lead a team to a Super Bowl title. Flacco’s leadership qualities during his time in Baltimore helped him become one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Flacco has experienced winning and losing throughout his career, and with the experience that he’s gained throughout his career, he can serve as a mentor to the younger players.
With Flacco in a backup quarterback position with the Jets, he can help Darnold in a big way. Flacco sees a lot of potential in Darnold, and that’s a good sign because Flacco had a lot of success during his career, and the fact that he knows that Darnold can be a really good player says a lot. Having a veteran quarterback like Flacco on the team is a big help for a young player like Darnold because he can have someone to go to for advice and pick their brain. There’s a reason why the Jets took Darnold with the third pick in the 2018 NFL draft because they saw the talent he possessed, and they saw him as their next franchise quarterback.
