Saquon Barkley and Odell Backham Jr. are some of the more electrifying talents in the NFL. Both were on the same team at one point, which was a nightmare for opposing defenses. Even though they are on different teams now, Barkley and Beckham still stay in touch. Their relationship is deeper than football, as they have become close friends off of the gridiron.
There was so much hope when Beckham and Barkley were on the New York Giants. They could’ve been such a dynamic duo with the right quarterback. It looks the two star players are planning some kind of reunion with each other. Unfortunately for Giants fans, the reunion won’t be in New York.
Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. both suffered torn ACLs
The 2020 season didn’t go as planned for Saquon Barkley or Odell Beckham. Both missed the majority of the season because of injuries they suffered early in the year. Another similarity in their seasons is that they both suffered torn ACL that cut their season short.
Barkley was the first of the pair to go down with his ACL injury. He suffered the injury trying to fend off a tackler against the Chicago Bears. His season only lasted two games before it was over. Injuries have impacted Barkley’s second and third seasons in New York. In the past two seasons, he has missed 17 games. Barkley underwent successful surgery on Oct. 30 and has been rehabbing since.
Beckham was the next one to lose his season to an ACL tear. He injured himself while trying to tackle a defender during an interception against the Bengals. The tear was in his left knee, ending his season after seven games. Injuries have marred Beckham’s time in Cleveland, and this is the most recent injury setback for OBJ. He had surgery on Nov. 10 and has been rehabbing since.
Having their seasons cut short because of injuries doesn’t sit well with these two stars. They have been progressing in their rehabbing, hoping to get back to full health by training camp. Beckham and Barkley are looking to reunite during the offseason, using their circumstances to motivate each other.
Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. plan to rehab together
Going through a severe injury like an ACL tear could result in players relying on others for advice or workout routines to optimize the rehabilitation process. Barkley has already reached out to Adrian Peterson, who ran for over 2,000 yards the season after tearing his ACL. Because they both are rehabbing the same injuries, Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham are planning to go through the process together.
The two are planning to get together this offseason and work on rehabbing their ACL injuries together, per ESPN. Barkley will be going out west to meet up with Beckham once the NFL finalizes the offseason schedule for teams. Barkley believes being around a close friend who is going through a similar situation will benefit both of them.
“Odell tore his knee a little too. I think we both need just being there. We’re really good friends. Competing with each other and pushing each other will also be good too,” said Barkley per ESPN. He and Beckham’s meet up every offseason, but this one is different given their ailments. He wants to use the time with OBJ to rehab and improve each other.
“I think it’s very important that since we are really close and we know each other so well, and we are two competitors, and we think we can really help each other, I do think it’s important to really link up. But at the same time, we both have to come in with the mindset of getting 1% better each day. That’s what we have to get from each other. Any way you can get it,” said Barkley.
Saquon Barkley invites other injured players to join him
The NFL dealt with numerous injuries to players this season. With the accelerated training camps and the virtual offseason programs, players suffered more soft tissue injuries. Barkley and Beckham weren’t the only ones who had ACL tears this season. Notable players like Nick Bosa, Joe Burrow, Bud Dupree, and Devin Bush also suffered ACL tears.
Saquon Barkley is all about surrounding himself around like-minded individuals and helping them get better every day. When he goes out west to link up with OBJ, he extended the invite to any other players who are rehabbing from injury. He doesn’t care if they don’t have an injury; he just wants them ready to work.
“I would love to, any of those guys that are going through this injury, whether it’s Joe [Burrow], [Devin] Bush, Bud [Dupree], there’re a couple guys, any guy, I think it would be really dope if we could all link up,” Barkley said.
Former teammates Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. are using their yearly link up to rehab their ACL injuries. It could turn into an ACL Rehab retreat if more players join them with the same injury. Barkley and Beckham are on a similar path to recovery and will use each other as motivation to return to 100%.
