Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler is finishing up his second campaign with the franchise. Wheeler received limited playing time in the 2020 campaign. However, his life has taken a concerning development after his involvement in a scary domestic violence incident.
Chad Wheeler’s NFL career
Chad Wheeler spent four years at USC, where he became a staple on their offensive line earning a First Team All-Pac-12 selection (2016) and Second Team All-Pac-12 honors (2015).
Despite that, he went unselected in the 2017 NFL draft, which the New York Giants signed him. He played in 27 games with 19 starts for the Giants from 2017-19, including making 14 starts in the 2018 campaign.
Wheeler joined the Seahawks in Oct. 2019, which saw him move from the practice squad to the active roster over his tenure. In the 2020 season, he took 65 offensive snaps and 22 on special teams. He played at right tackles in two games against the Giants and New York Giants last December due to injuries.
The 27-year-old’s life has taken a discouraging turn in his personal life over this past weekend.
Chad Wheeler arrested after frightening domestic violence charges
Chad Wheeler’s life took a concerning turn over the weekend after a scary situation unfolded at his home.
According to the Seattle Times, Wheeler was arrested on early Saturday morning after charges of domestic violence and assault that hold a $400,000 bond. Law enforcement detained the 27-year-old after receiving a 911 call from the alleged victim, his girlfriend.
The report from the incident stated that the police officers sent to the location heard screaming from inside the apartment. The officers forced their way into the residence and went into the bathroom, where the screaming stemmed.
Law enforcement reportedly found Wheeler next to the victim. The veteran NFL lineman was initially uncooperative with the officers arresting him. The reports stated that the entire situation escalated after Wheeler grabbed and threw the victim onto a bed after denying to bow to him.
He then strangled his girlfriend that led to her losing consciousness. When she regained consciousness, Wheeler reportedly stated, “Wow you’re alive?”
The woman then ran into the bathroom, where she called 911 and family. Wheeler picked the door lock and got into the bathroom before the police arrived at his apartment.
The report indicated that Wheeler had been on medication for bipolar disorder and had not used them as of late. The victim was taken to a local medical center due to arm pain.
Seahawks issue statement regarding the situation
The entire incident surrounding Wheeler has led to a quick response from the Seattle Seahawks.
The Seahawks sent out a brief statement regarding the situation around the veteran offensive lineman.
“We are aware of the situation and still gathering information.” stated the team press release.
Wheeler just completed his one-year, $825,000 contract with the Seahawks for the 2020 season. He had initially signed with the team in October 2019 and has remained with the organization since.
The Seahawks, along with the NFL, will conduct thorough investigations into the matter over the next several days. The incident will likely result in swift punishment levied down from the league regardless of the legal ruling.
Beyond that, it will be quite difficult for Wheeler to get another shot to continue his NFL career, given that he was already a fringe roster player. The 27-year-old has put himself in a challenging situation that may very well cost him any future opportunities to extend his professional career.
