One of the most respected people in the NBA is Ernie Johnson. He is an Emmy-award winning sports broadcaster and journalist. His distinctive voice brings a smile to everyone’s face when he talks.
Ernie Johnson’s career kicked off when he was in college
Johnson is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and he attended the University of Georgia. In college, he studied journalism, and he took a job as the news and sports director for the radio station WAGQ-FM in Athens, Georgia. Johnson had that job until he graduated in 1978. A year later, he began his broadcasting career at a local news station in Macon, Georgia. He worked there for two years. After that, he moved to South Carolina to take a news reporter job.
Johnson quickly gained experience in the news industry. After working in South Carolina, he moved back to Georgia and worked at a news station in Atlanta. There he became the station’s weekend sports anchor and reporter. For three years, Johnson had the pleasure of calling Atlanta Braves games with his father Ernie Johnson Sr.
Ernie Johnson making the transition to Turner Sports
In 1990, Johnson took a big step in his career when he joined Turner sports and served as a studio host for TNT’s coverage of the NBA. Johnson has been with TNT since 1990, and he has become a fan favorite. Whenever you watch TNT during the NBA season, you will see Johnson sitting in the middle with former NBA players Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith sitting on the right and left of him.
Johnson is like the glue that holds everyone together, and if the others seem to get off track during the show, he knows how to reel them back in. Johnson’s voice draws you into the show, and his personality is great. Watching the four of them together, you can tell they have great chemistry, and Johnson is the one that anchors everything.
The sports broadcasting industry is a tough industry to get into. Johnson has had experience since his college days working with numerous news stations, and with his experience and hard work, that helped him become the man he is today.
Ernie Johnson faced some health issues, but that didn’t stop him
In 2003, Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When he received the diagnosis, he continued to work through June of 2006, when he began treatment. Due to his cancer, he had to miss some sports coverage for TNT. But he didn’t stay away for long. He made a return in October of 2006 while he continued with his chemotherapy treatments.
Johnson has covered different sports, from basketball to baseball throughout his career. He has a good knowledge of all sports, and that’s something that makes him unique. During his career, he suffered another minor setback when he was diagnosed with blood clots in both of his legs in 2018, and he announced that he would not be a part of the MLB postseason on TBS. He was able to make a recovery and return to basketball for the upcoming season. Fans across all sports are familiar with Johnson, and once you hear his voice for the first time, you’ll never forget it. He continues to work hard at his craft and is doing a good job at it.
