Stefon Diggs Contract: Why the Buffalo Bills Pro Bowler Deserves Every Penny

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane and the front office continue to prove their loyalty and commitment to their biggest stars. Quarterback Josh Allen inked a monster six-year, $258 million extension with $150 million guaranteed. Now, Stefon Diggs is getting a huge payday.

Diggs and the Bills recently agreed to terms on a long-term contract that will keep the Pro Bowl wide receiver in Buffalo for the foreseeable future. With the NFL shifting to a pass-heavy league, there’s an influx of wideouts putting up elite numbers. Diggs has been a model of consistency and a massive part of the Bills’ success over the past two seasons.

The veteran is just the latest top-tier receiver to get paid, which could open doors for the next crop of stars at the position.

The Buffalo Bills just locked up one of their best players for a long time. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the team signed wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a four-year, 104 million extension.

Surely, the long-term deal made Diggs a happy camper, as it includes $70 million in guaranteed money. He had two years left on his previous contract. The deal now ties the two-time Pro Bowler to the franchise for the next six seasons.

The 2022 offseason has been busy for the wide receiver position. The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers and gave him a five-year, $140 million contract. The Miami Dolphins gave Tyreek Hill four years, $120 million, making him the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

Now, Diggs sees his years of hard work manifest into a lucrative long-term deal with the Bills.

Why the Pro Bowl wide receiver deserved a massive deal

The Bills acquired Stefon Diggs from the Minnesota Vikings before the 2020 season in exchange for a package of draft picks. The reward turned out to be well worth the risk.

Diggs has blossomed into legitimately one of the best wide receivers in the league. The Maryland product enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career in his first year with the team. He recorded 127 receptions for 1,535 yards and eight touchdowns. He led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards that season.

Diggs continued to be highly productive during the 2021 season. He caught 103 passes for 1,225 receiving yards and 10 scores. His connection with Josh Allen is only getting stronger, as he’s coming off the highest touchdown total of his career.

The Vikings selected the 28-year-old in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He’s easily outperformed his draft position. Diggs undoubtedly is one of the most technical route-runners in football and has an elite pair of hands to match. Despite some people questioning his character in the past, he won Buffalo over immediately.

Now, Stefon Diggs will likely finish his career with the Bills.

Which wideout could be next to get paid?

The 2022 offseason will be one to remember for the wide receiver position. Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams, and Tyreek Hill received hefty long-term deals. All three players have put the work in and deserved new contracts.

Considering how loaded the position is right now, it’s likely only a matter of time before the next big-time wide receiver gets his big payday. But, who is next?

D.K. Metcalf, A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel, and Terry McLaurin are heading into the final year of their rookie contracts. All are focal points of their respective offenses.

Deebo Samuel enjoyed a monster breakout season in 2021. His versatility as a playmaker within the San Francisco 49ers offense could compel the front office to secure him long-term sooner rather than later. Given the talent of Metcalf, Brown, and McLaurin, long-term deals should be coming soon for them as well.
