Stephen A. Smith Goes off on Deshaun Watson’s Critics After J.J. Watt Is Granted His Release From the Texans

The one and only Stephen A. Smith of ESPN is not happy with Deshaun Watson’s critics after the Houston Texans released J.J. Watt on Friday.

Watson has been bashed by a few old NFL figures for requesting a trade from the Texans. Smith, one of the most outspoken personalities in sports, called out Watson’s detractors following the news of Watt getting waived by the Texans.

Brett Favre said Deshaun Watson makes way too much money to voice an opinion on where he should play. Dick Vermeil also said the Pro Bowler is acting like a child and that the Texans should “change his diapers.”

Watson has requested a trade from the Texans. He has a no-trade clause in his contract, so Houston can’t trade the star QB to a team he doesn’t want to play for. Watson led the NFL in passing yards in 2020. He threw for 4,823 yards and racked up 33 passing touchdowns.

After the Texans hired Nick Caserio as their new general manager without consulting Watson, the 25-year-old formally requested a trade. A few rumors have stated that Watson hasn’t spoken to Caserio or Houston CEO Cal McNair.

J.J. Watt asked the Texans to release him, and the franchise accommodated one of the best players in NFL history. Stephen A. Smith, who never minces his words, used Watt’s release to bash guys like Brett Favre and Dick Vermeil for thumping Deshaun Watson.

On “Stephen A’s World,” Stephen A. Smith called out Deshaun Watson’s critics after J.J. Watt asked for and received his release from the Texans.

The veteran ESPN pundit knew Houston’s situation was bad from the moment reports surfaced that Watson wasn’t happy.

“I told ya’ll from the very start of the Deshaun Watson saga that things were a lot worse in Houston than we knew publicly,” Smith said. “Yet some people still wanted to direct their criticism toward Watson. Brett Favre, Dick Vermeil. Saying Watson was too young, that he didn’t know his place. Well, now what? Where’s the criticism for J.J. Watt now that he wanted the same thing? The Texans didn’t hunker down and say that they refused to let J.J. Watt go. Oh no, they treated him like a man. Deshaun Watson hasn’t been afforded the same treatment. In fact, the Texans have doubled down on him again. Cal McNair says he isn’t budging. The Texans treat J.J. Watt like a man and Deshaun Watson like a petulant child. Deshaun Watson saw all of this coming. He was the first to call out what was happening in Houston.”

Smith wants the Texans to trade Watson and treat him with the same respect they showed toward Watt. It makes sense why Houston wants to keep Watson since he’s one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

However, if the Texans granted J.J. Watt his wish, Stephen A. Smith believes they should do the same for Deshaun Watson.

Where will the former Clemson star play next season?

NFL fans are waiting on pins and needles to see where Deshaun Watson will play next season. It doesn’t appear the electric gunslinger will change his mind about wanting out of Houston from the outside looking in.

The New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, and Chicago Bears have been heavily linked to a Watson trade. It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all plays out.
