Stephon Marbury Did Not like Playing for This Particular Coach During His NBA Career

Stephon Marbury was a basketball prodigy growing up in the streets of Brooklyn, New York. Everyone knew he was going to be the next one from the neighborhood to make it to the league, and he did.

Marbury got off to a really good start during his NBA career, and he established himself as one of the top point guards. But there was a coach that he did not like playing for.

Stephon Marbury becoming a household name during his NBA career

Marbury started his NBA career in 1996 with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his first season, he averaged 15.8 points and 7.8 assists per game. He was named to the All-Rookie First Team. During his time in Minnesota, he helped lead the Timberwolves to two playoff appearances in 1997 and 1998. Marbury only played in Minnesota for two and a half years and wanted to be traded after the 1997-98 season. He wanted to be closer to home, and during the 1998-99 season, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets.

Marbury had a good career playing in New Jersey. He made his first All-Star team as a member of the Nets in 2001. Marbury became one of the top true point guards in the game. He knew how to control the tempo of the game and was a leader on the court. After a short time with the Nets, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in the 2001 offseason. He made his second All-Star team in 2003 as a member of the Suns. Though Marbury was having success and making a name for himself, he could not stay with a team long term.

After spending time out west, Marbury had the opportunity to play for his hometown team. Marbury was traded to the New York Knicks in January of 2004, and a lot of fans were excited to have Marbury play at Madison Square Garden. During the 2004-05 season, he averaged 21.7 points. The next season, Marbury did not see eye to eye with the new head coach.

Stephon Marbury and Larry Brown not getting along

Marbury and Brown already had a history before Brown became the head coach of the Knicks in 2005. Brown was the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team in which Marbury was a part of. Marbury did not like playing for Brown then, and now he had to play for him again with the Knicks. The two did not see eye to eye on a lot of things, and it got to the point where he started to become personal.

In sports, for teams to be successful, there needs to be a good relationship between the coach and players. It’s even more important for one of your best players to have a good relationship with the coach. That was not the case with Marbury and Brown. There was a lot of verbal confrontation between the two, and it was not good for the team who was already struggling at the time. Brown only coached the Knicks for one season as the team was struggling to find their identity.

Stephon Marbury is no fan of Larry Brown

Even after he was done playing in the NBA, Marbury still addressed his concerns about Brown. In a video from 2018, Marbury talked about his feelings toward Brown. You can tell that Marbury still has his issues toward Brown, and he will never forget the times he played with him on the Olympic team and with the Knicks.

Marbury will probably never get over those times he played under Brown. You would think that they would have tried to work things out for the better of the team, but that was not the case. Marbury did enjoy a decent NBA career, but if you bring up the name Larry Brown to him, he will have some things to say, and they most likely won’t be nice.
